(The Present)
Hi I'm Sam. I'm a beta and I was a fierce hunter and an amazing scout. Firestar, our resident medicine wolf, is the wolf I care for most. I intend to stay bonded with him for the rest of our lives.Â
(The Past )
8 months. She'd been on her own for 8 months. To be honest, as a pup Sam never thought about the downsides of leaving her pack. She only ever thought about what a great adventure it would be, racing over Mountain Ranges, drinking from the crisp, clear waters of the Taiga, rolling through the tall grass of the Prairie. No one ever mentioned the raw, burning loneliness she would feel.
The first week wasn't terrible, she caught a few mice, pestered the cattle around a local ranch, and chased and played with foxes as she crossed over into the Grasslands. The lonely, empty night is what bothered her the most. She was used to her large family snuggling up with her during the night. Her wonderful, wacky, loyal, and caring family. She missed them so much, but she couldn't go back, the pack was most likely filled up already. Someone was always pregnant, it always seemed when one wolf would leave, two more would move in to take their place. It was bizarre! As she lay in the soft grassy den she prepared earlier that morning, stomach still empty despite the quail eggs she snapped up that evening, she thought of her old pack and what a new pack could bring. Mixed emotions and a rumbly tummy made sleeping very hard that night.
A three days trek across the Grasslands, found Sam standing at the treeline of the Deciduous Forest. This place reeked of wolf scent. A nervous whine left her throat, if she wanted a pack, this was the place to find one. "Or maybe not." Sam mumbled to herself, slightly miffed that it was her fourth day in this accused forest and she still hadn't met a single wolf. Coyotes? Yep. Foxes? Lots. Birds, bugs, rabbits, and deer? Way too many if you ask her. At this point she'd settle for a pack of puppies, better than being alone at any rate.
Sam wandered deeper and deeper in to the woods, fallen leaves crunching under her paws. The wind ruffled her fur, breathing deeply, she froze. She stood stock still as a dark furred alpha approached. She, because now that the alpha was closer Sam could definitely smell that she was female, seemed confused for a second, tilting her head as if in thought and slowing to a standstill. The alpha recovered quickly though, standing up tall and raising her tail. Sam was not amused by this alpha's dominant display, maybe she was trespassing on this alpha's turf? This alpha might already have a full pack and might not be in the mood for random wolves using up their resources. If she was trespassing on this alpha's turf, they had every right to run her off or worse. Deciding she was not interested in a potential fight Sam slowly started to back away. The alpha seemed extremely hurt by this. Lowering her entire body and letting out a pitiful whine, 'please don't go', she conveyed with sheer sorrow laced in to her voice. Sam stopped her retreat, slightly curious about what game this alpha was trying to play. Did she not understand that raising her tail was a dominant gesture? That's basic body language, pups learn those types of things before they learn to speak. Sam took a good look at the alpha, young and inexperienced for sure, she looked as if she had done this before but under someone else's strict guidance. Maybe she really had been living under a rock tor most of her life, she barely looked like an alpha at all with her slicked back ears and puppy-ish cries for attention. Sam decided to take the initiative and introduce herself. The sad puppy face was gone in an instant as the alpha happily replied with her own name. They had somehow wound grooming each other as they talked, the alpha, Darcy, went on and on about the stress of trying to run her tiny pack of five adults and her two newborn pups. As if her own words were finally sinking in, she jumped up, leaving Sam to flop over from the sudden lack of support. "Ohmygoshmypups!Their probably starving by now. I'm really sorry but I have to go." Darcy sniffed the air for a moment, no doubt trying to find home. Turning eastward, the alpha raced off towards her pups. What she didn't count on was Sam's clear, crisp howl, cutting through the trees. Darcy stopped, having a random lone wolf howl at you normally only meant one thing. Sam smiled and trotted up to Darcy, "Could you use some extra help. I'm a pretty good hunter?" Darcy nuzzled her cheek and started up a howl, Sam joining in along with five differing calls in the distance.
After 8 months Sam had achieved her goal, once again she had a family. A crazy, loving, and loyal family to protect and provide for. When it comes to family, no adventure could ever compare.Â
