As his father Faranor, the Pack Leader, aged and was preparing to choose his heir, Farn started to grow feathers. At first they were small, nearly invisible against his then dark fur. Following the feathers were talons, and a pair of dark raven wings. Faranor took this as a sign to pass the mantle of leadership to Farn. Despite this, Faranor's decision was questioned by the pack, for many viewed his half-sister Farryn, the firstborn of the farwolf lineage, to be more suitable for the role. Due to this tension, Farn has grown distant from Farryn, despite having been close as youngsters. Nevertheless, when Faranor walked into the woods for the last time Farn stepped up to take his father's place.
When Farn took on the mantle of Pack Leader he was also entrusted with leading the shepherding of the light. However, his first attempt left him stranded in the dreamlands after failing to lead the light in the right direction. When he emerged a day later his pelt was forever changed, a reminder of his mistake, and of his determination to improve.
