He was actually part hunting dog, bred by humans for novelty before being dumped into the wild--which was why, he claimed, his niche was tracking prey as part of the Gatherers. Graytips kept him in line whenever he tried to excuse mistakes via made-up stories or blaming someone else (usually Wilder, his partner in crime). Snarls and Wilder shared his sense of humor, and he certainly tried to pass it on to any pack pups, especially ones he'd adopted or fathered.

Toward the end of his life, he willingly gave up his role to Splash, who he helped train beforehand. In his old age, he continued to mentor other young pups in various lessons, always throwing in jokes (and possibly teaching them a thing or two about making up creative lies...).
