A former ally of Thermal. He was the father of Billow and Steam, after Polar had arranged him to breed with Thermal. While he was alive, Turf was manipulative and full of himself. He first swindled Bear into giving up his role of scouting to him and raise his pups, which had went unnoticed by Polar. No one knew that he and Thermal were conspiring to take over the pack, and she needed him to scout the southern woodlands for territory. Thanks to Misty, Bear was able to resume scouting and found Turf in the Riparian Woods. There, they got into a fight, and Bear won. During Turf's confession, Thermal and Sedge argued in his favor, accusing Polar lagging behind in the discovery of the lands. It was then decided that, for attacking Bear, Turf would not be chased, but instead live on as an outcast within the pack.
For a while, Turf and Thermal's plot remained confidential, with Sedge eventually joining in. They started executing their plan when Thermal and Turf attacked Elk in the desert and pushed him off a cliff, killing him. Next, Thermal would become a scout and stage a coupe against Polar while she was pregnant and vulnerable, chasing both her and Bear out of the territory. Thermal would continue to oppress the remaining members, but keep Turf at her side and use him and Steam to scout the desert. During this time, Turf wanted to form a lasting pair bond with Thermal. But he was rejected, after seeing the passage form of elk in the desert and being called a worthless coward by Thermal. This caused Turf to feel resentful, so much so that as he was on his last legs after an intense fight with Bear, he endured long enough to catch Thermal as she was rejoicing over her apparent victory over Polar, and kill her. Because of this, Turf is remembered as the "smoke that put out the fire".
