the stranger came roaring into the swamp like the worst of a storm. the first the Pines knew of xem was blood - cougar's blood, a half-devoured carcass in a pool of it - and wolf-scent, stinking not of fear but joy. then a wolf was sighted just on the horizon: mottles like mudstains, white fur with golden undertones like fire trapped beneath ice.

Rachuact was born to a pack on the edge of the world, so far removed from other packs that xe speaks, at times, almost an entirely different language. the wolves of the distant glacier cut their teeth not on the neighbours at their border, but the bears and great walruses that roam their lands; failing that, their own packmates, of equally monstrous strength. Khomulamar was honed by their surroundings, fierce and the truest wild there is - and brutal, unforgiving as the cold. there is no room for excess. many of their yearlings - the ones who survive, that is - are sent from the pack to seek new homes in the south.

this is what Rachuact did. journeying to kinder lands, xe sought wolves to pledge xir loyalty to - a worthy cause, in essence. it began to seem that something else wanted that for xem as well. Rachuact found xemself led by ravens overhead to unguarded carcasses, lone elk or deer, herbs when xir throat itched with a cough. somehow, xe trusted that the herbs were the right ones, and within a few days xe had recovered. then finally Rachuact entered the swampland that the Pines called home, and that was where their paths were united.

at first, Rachuact lived in Pines territory as an outskirter. xe would proffer help, when opportunity arose: pass on trails or sightings of sounders, warn patrols of bold coyotes or bears settling down to cub. it was largely appreciated, if warily so - helped by many of the Pines' young wolves being drawn to Rachuact's bold nature and distinctive pelt, and when time came for them to find a sire, well, it was easier if they didn't have to look far.

what truly ingratiated xem with the pack was an encounter with the ambitious Rogaku. she had followed a yearling out into the woods, followed in turn by a patrol led by Urwain'ghrac herself; they'd had their eyes on her a while, since the mysterious disappearance of another trainee and veiled warnings from the acolytes. Rachuact intercepted this patrol, asked to join them in their cause, and Urwain'ghrac, if reluctantly, agreed. they arrived to find Rogaku with her teeth in Dried Leaves' throat. in the battle that followed, Rachuact's tenacity and strength was indispensable. impressed, Urwain'ghrac offered xem a place among the Pines - Rachuact accepted, joining as their newest scout. from there, Rachuact grew to become a beloved packmate.

at the beginning of xir fifth year, in very early spring, the Pines had meandered in their annual trek to Glademoss. ilerrou had been late that winter, and no pups had yet been born; they had lost their sense of urgency, and when ordinarily they would have been settled in their nursing-site already, they were just coming up to the shoreline and setting a temporary camp in preparation for the crossing at dawn. it had always been safe - in winter, when the bears were denning and lethargic. but come spring, a dark-furred shape stirred from its den, arrived upon the slumbering feast, and attempted to drag away the adolescent Rysur.

Rachuact was there in an instant, springing awake with Rysur's first yelp of fearful pain. xe hurled xemself into the bear, distracted it enough for Rysur to escape, and their fight truly began. except that it was, in the end, hardly a fight - by the time anyone else could join, Rachuact had xir teeth deep in the bear's throat, ripping them away with a spray of blood and fur clenched tightly in xir fangs. the bear collapsed, dead before it hit the ground. Rysur was hurried to the herbalists, and the Pines made the swim sooner than planned, their strongest members hauling the carcass between them. once they had reached the other side, and Rysur's safety was assured - she was more startled than injured, thanks to the swift intervention - they raised their voices in song and a feast began.

Lerifyac brought Rachuact forwards, announced that she had three gifts to bestow upon xem. first was the bear's pelt, carefully removed in a single piece. next, a title: Frozentooth, in honour of the killing blow xe dealt and the wintry lands that had honed xir strength and skill. finally, Rachuact was given the rank of oolaursa at a younger age than any Pines wolf before xem.
