After a hunting accident as an adolescent that left him blind in his right eye, Meriadoc found himself looking for purpose. He had wanted to be a hunter like his mother Laik, but found himself struggling to make any headway in his training with his impaired sight. He could certainly do the job, but not very well and not very fast. Other hunters in training surpassed him, and he watched with disappointment as wolves younger than himself were taken out for hunting trips and promoted to permanent positions within the hunting bands.

Laik suggested to her son that he instead study under Kaneq, the pack's herbalist, to expand his options and find purpose. Meri didn't like the idea at first, but he would come to love the detailed work of a healer. He found it easier to track herbs based on scent and memory than it was to track prey over harsh land, and he loved the task of organizing amd reorganizing the medicine storage.

He is very close to his older sister Ikiaq, and the two often go on trail patrols together to pick herbs and hunt for lazy summer hares.
