Artemy was known for his increasingly hermitic behavior, and while he was not cold towards pack members who spoke to him, it's clear that he was not willing to give all of his attention to the vast majority of the wolves that approached him.
After his friend and life-partner Grief's death, he became married to his work, only sparing time for the new leader Angela.
Visitors to the pack would see not hide nor hair of him unless they were sickly, as he rarely if ever left his workstation, but you would be hard-pressed to have found a better herbalist than him, as he had not only dedication to his work, but a life-time of experience in his field.
As he would not come and get it himself, Angela brought him his meals every day personally.
He passed one morning, at the tail-end of winter. Angela had come to bring him something to eat before he started to work, only to find him still laying down. She immediately knew his time must have come, from the rigidity of his body, and the fact that his work ethic had never allowed him to simply sleep in late.
That morning, the pack had a parting ceremony for him. It included burning herbs that are said to help lead wolves into a peaceful afterlife, and speeches from Angela and his apprentice, Beckett.
Although he would have preferred to have been laid to rest beside Grief, the previous leader's body had never been found. Instead, the pack made a collective effort, and planted an herb garden, with his grave in the center, so that his body could give back to the land.
