Biography
CowrieĀ orĀ cowryĀ (pluralĀ cowries) is theĀ common nameĀ for a group of small to largeĀ sea snails,Ā marineĀ gastropodĀ mollusksĀ in the familyĀ Cypraeidae, the cowries.
The termĀ porcelainĀ derives from the oldĀ ItalianĀ term for the cowrie shell (porcellana) due to their similar appearance. Shells of certain species have historically been used asĀ currencyĀ in several parts of the world, as well as being used, in the past and present, very extensively inĀ jewelry, and for other decorative and ceremonial purposes.
