Story (wip):
Valkyrie was born as the first sunlight of winter spilled into the hollow. Whisper refused to admit who the father was, and Willow, being the kind-hearted leader she was, gently reminded anyone who was being pushy about it that all the wolves in her pack are not required to inform who fathered their pups. She also reminded them that unlike her former pack, this pack was not family based, and thus, outside mating was allowed. After this, the questioning stopped. But the side glances and muttering did not.
Valkyrie was quite a calm pup, preferring to watch the sunrise or observe the bustling hollow rather than play with her siblings. This was great for her poor mother, who was always trying to keep the other three pups out of trouble while also taking care of the packs other young.
During her assessment, to see what role in the pack she would take, Valkyrie was put on a trial run with the Eastern Valley hunting patrol. This was to see if she could follow orders, and what her strengths were. Valkyrie followed a strong elk scent for a few miles, but lost it once it crossed a rather deep, fast flowing river. Due to it being the dead of winter, Wildfire advised against following that trail, and suggested going to the north side of the valley, as there was always some weasels hanging out there. Valkyrie slowly observed the river as the group discussed where to go. She gave the chilly air a good sniff, and picked up a faint elk scent further down the bank, indicating that the elk hadn't crossed the river. Rather, it had likely accidently ran in and bounded out a few meters down. Valkyrie followed the scent all the way to a weakly grazing elk cow. The group took it down with ease, and Wildfire boasted about how well Valkyrie had done.
Valkyrie was casually rearranging the prey when she was approached by Willow. I've done something, haven't I? She thought to herself. Willow rarely approached anyone outside of Wildfire and a select few elder wolves.
"Good afternoon, Valkyrie." Willow smiled at her, and sat stiffly across from her. "Would you like to take a stroll with me? I'm sure Star can finish sorting this pile." Valkyrie could tell that was an order more than a suggestion, and quietly stood up to follow Willow. They trotted out of the hollow and followed the well worn pathway that lead to the small pond clearing. As they're walking, Willow began to talk about little things, like how she's sad that she no longer could have pups, how she misses actively going to the glacier, even though it took days. Valkyrie for the most part, tuned her out and was listening to the wind and the songs of the birds. It wasn't until they got to the pond and Willow sat down did she realize what was happening.
"Valkyrie, the reason I'm telling you all this is because I'm not getting younger, and I know my days are numbered. I cannot leave this pack without appointing a successor, and I would like you to lead this pack once I am too old and frail."
Valkyrie shook her head, her heart pounding at the thought of having to interact with all those wolves, and have to stay in a certain area at certain times, and keep up with everything. Willow gazed at her calmly, a reassuring glint in her eyes. Seeing this somehow calmed Valkyrie, and allowed her to think more logically about this. She gazed at the pond, which the last rays of sunlight hit, causing the pond to look bloody.
"Valkyrie, I trust you not only because of your quick thinking and knowledge, but because you have something that only Wildfire and I have." Willow murmured, watching the bloody pond. "Please, consider my wish."
