Biography
"Mother. I don't understand. Surely my brothers would be of more benefit to the future. I will run the pack into the ground. I never wanted this." she whined.
Tetra smiled at her young daughter, wanting to move to comfort her but finding it impossible. The old wolf's body was already failing her. While words had never come easy to the queen, they would have to do. She considered them carefully before addressing her heir.
"Min. You are the true heir of the pack. Goliath is getting to be an old wolf himself, and he grows tired. The pups need him more than the adults. He brings them joy. Bax is... He is a good boy, but I have seen the anger behind his eyes. He takes after your father too much. I fear putting him in charge will bring the pack into conflict, and that is simply not our ways."
"You can call out to those who have left. My littermates who left, even Thorn would be a better choice than I!"
"Thorn is as old as Goliath and more ruthless still than your father himself. He had to leave. Your other littermates left of their own accord, and while I miss them in these times it can't be helped. Even then, child, they do not have your kind heart. You will be the heart of this pack, Min, after I go. That day is soon. I want to leave the pack in the paws of someone who will continue to nurture them, to help them grow and thrive during their time under the sun. I have seen the cubs you have brought back from your expeditions. They adore you, and the pack sees your gentle soul and they too adore you... And I know that you love them. I know that you will do your best to protect them, and to continue to bring me pride. So please, Min, let and old wolf sleep easy. Tell me you will take my place. Take care of my wards. Lead them to longevity."
-----------------------------------------------
Min looked down at the still form of her mother, finally able to rest easy, finally able to join Strass in the afterlife. The pack around her mourned, but she only felt a coldness. A numbness. She was alpha now, she didn't want the responsibility but she was alpha now.
Her eyes swept the pack. She knew their names, she knew their stories. She knew how her mother had helped them or their parents in their time of need, bringing them into the fold. Tetra had dedicated her life to them and they were her legacy. Not she, not her brothers, not her siblings who had left for the world but the pack itself. The hunters, the cubs, they were what was left of her mother.
Min was not one of them, but she would guide them into the future.
-----
Min earned a scar over her eye in a fight with a mountain lion. She doesn't like to talk about it.
Min earned the scar across her nose in a fight with a lynx. Min is starting to really dislike felines.
-----
When finally Min slipped away to eat, Achilles made his move, running in to say goodbye to the father he had loved so much. He was not yet gone when Min returned, and the heir received more than he was ready to take. His mother fought him, snarling and snapping, finally forcing him out, stained with his own blood.
This continued for days, the alpha guarding over what wasn't even Hemlock anymore. The others tried to reason with her, tried to get through to her, but it was no use. Then one morning Achilles approached the den to find it empty. No body, no Alpha. Both of his parents had vanished.
For months the pack would see and smell Min around the territory. Just a glimpse in the distance only for her to be gone when they looked again. They didn't yet know whether Min would return or if it was time for Achilles to take his place as their leader.
