Vega was born in the midst of the packs harshest winter. The bitter cold had picked its way through most of the newborns, claiming their lives one by one.
It was devastating for the pack. Such a loss took its toll on their morale. But there was a single bright spark in the surviving girl.
As the snow and wind raged on and Vegas last sibling perished, her mother, Delta, took drastic action. The only place she knew that her last pup could survive was within the dreamlands where the wind stood ever still.
Delta planned to take off in the dead of night. She was going to abandon her pack, her mother, her siblings, her mate, all in pursuit of the dreamlands. No one could know where she was going as they'd no doubt stop her from carrying through.
Grabbing her tiny pup by the scruff she tackled the storm, holding her head high to keep the poor thing above the snow and ice that had settled way above her knees. She tripped and stumbled but never lost her grip. The pup trembled and whimpered as frost coated her fur.
She reached the river, now frozen thick with ice. She dug in with her claws and bounded across the ice, picking up incredible speed. The opening to the spirit realm was ahead of her, clear as the moon in the sky. Only she could see it, having been born with the ability to cross over. A gift she had always cherished, and now she hoped it may serve her well once more. The dreamland had not failed her yet, and she was the second generation after her own mother to seek solace in the strange land.
She rapidly closed the gap, the call of the realm singing to her soul and reverbing through her bones.
As the gate sang to her, the pup in her jaw fell silent. Almost as though enthralled by the sound. A sound that none of her family could hear until now.
Just a few leaps forward. Just a few more seconds she thought. It drew closer, sanctuary. Safety.
In the distance she heard the distressed cry of her mother, quickly followed by the rest of her pack. Calling her home.
Delta skidded to a halt, stopping at the very edge of the crossover. She gently placed the pup on the ice, the wee thing manoeuvring her body towards the gate, emitting a pitiful howl as she answered the song of the void.
Above the distant call of her family, a single howl arose above the rest. The voice of her mate, her love, her pups doting father. It wasn't a voice of anguish, but a deep beautiful note conveying determination and faith. Everything she needed to hear was in that howl. It wasn't just that he understood, it was laced with forgiveness, hope, promise.
Tears stung her eyes and she threw back her head to reply with her own howl, cracking with the emotion of heartbreak.
She carefully picked up her pup, and with a fleeting look towards her mountain home, she stepped through the gate. The sound of her mates voice still ringing in her ears.
And so began the journey to raise her single pup in the dreamlands.
The first night she nestled herself into deep blue shrubs, enveloping the pups body with her own. Simply to encourage warmth and rest. The next day she travelled slowly, avoiding conflict with passing spirits. They took few breaks so that she would have time to reach the lands of the glacier ice, where she built a den deep within a cave lined the softest materials she could find. They were safe now, and over the week the pup gained strength. She opened her eyes on the fourth morning, a beautiful shade of blue with the same sheen as her mother. Spirit eyes, Delta called them.
She took her first proper steps, and ate her first solid morsel of food, the blubber of a lunar whale that had beached nearby.
She grew quickly, and flourished in her new environment. Delta named her Vega, Vega Rune. Passing her second name to her beloved child in a symbolic way.
Vega's coat showed signs of change. First deepening to the same gorgeous blue as Delta, and when she was big enough to venture out of their den, it changed once more. Reflecting the brilliant hues of the ice and sky that surrounded them.
She spoke her first words, alerting her mother to a distant charged spirit. Her tiny voice chimed like silk and silver with a hint of strange wisdom that shouldn't come from a being so small.
Her eyes had begun to clear, first changing shades from blue to violet, and eventually losing the glaze. They were piercing, and never missed any sign of movement.
Delta saw a lot of herself in her daughter. The air of quiet confidence, strong intuition to the land around them, keen interest in every piece of new information that she soaked in and developed. She was strong, smart, capable, imaginative. Delta tried to treat her as an equal, encouraging her to grow as an individual with gentle guidance. Their bond was strong and Vega never needed to be reprimanded for misbehaviour. She learned all about the dream realm. The creatures that resided there, the way they became overcharged with its bizarre energy. The importance of diffusing conflict within them, and learning about the relationship between this world, and her home land. She listened to stories of the family she couldn't remember during evenings spent under the glistening aurora sky.
Soon the time came for them to return. Winter would be over and their pack was waiting. Vega never wanted to leave, wishing to spend the rest of her life in the dreamlands with her mother. And Delta, who had always felt most at peace in the dreamlands, wished they could stay forever too.
WIP ~
When Vega hit her third moon, they started the journey home.
Integration into the pack wasn't difficult. They were all enamoured with her.
Delta reluctantly relinquished half of her motherly duties to Kira, the most experienced pup sitter. Many of the pack members wanted to aid in her lessons. She was fascinating to watch, she took everything in her stride and retained an incredible amount of information.
After monitoring her progress over the weeks Wicca quietly decided that Vega would be the one to take over leadership of the pack, disclosing her decision to Delta first. It was decided that they would tell her on her sixth moon, and Delta would take over her tutoring, taking her on scouting missions to learn about their surrounding territory. Delta took this opportunity to plan their trips within the dreamlands, a secret both the wolves would share as it wasn't strictly part of the deal with the black wolf.
