lunacy (n.)

1540s, "condition of being a lunatic," formed irregularly in English from lunatic (q.v.) + -cy. Originally in reference to intermittent periods of insanity, such as were believed to be triggered by the moon's cycle. The Old English equivalent was monaðseocnes "month-sickness." In later legal use, any unsoundness of mind sufficient to render one incapable of civil transactions or management of one's affairs. Weakened figurative sense "act of madness or folly" is from 1580s.


🌙 As the grandson of pack leader Wick, Lunacy enjoyed a sense of priority throughout his puphood, though the elders made it a point to impress upon the youth that Syndica is, and always has been, an egalitarian pack. Still, his is a respected line, and he knows it: as a direct descendant of Hræfn, the legendary raven-whisperer and foremother of yore from the pack's fledgling era, wolves of his lineage have traditionally been hunters for the pack, and damn good ones at that, even if the avian allegiance has all but been forsaken. Unfortunately, Lunacy will have his way, and his way is all ways: not content to spend his days tracking, chasing, or taking down prey, he insists on sampling everything this world has to offer. The pack concedes: once the season's pups are weaned, you're off pupsitting duty, free to roam the world. Little does he know scouting is the hardest assignment on the books. But so far, it seems a surprisingly good fit: he returns from his long journeys weary, but without complaint or sigh. Perhaps this brat can back up his bark with bite.
