Biography
Second generation Amber Bloodline
After her mother's retirement from the Herbalist position, Sadatoni rose to claim it as her birthright. She became the second Herbalist in the Dark Brotherhood on August 19th, 2021. Her daughter, Irena, is never far behind her.
Sadatoni blinked, peering up at the cloudy skies above. The sun looked down at her, dappling her fur with its light through the trees. She sniffed. It'd been a whole moon cycle since her mother died.
She hadn't gotten used to that feeling of emptiness just yet.
She kicked at the ground with her paws, restless as usual. Herbert had forced her to go on a break for the spring, to recover from the harsh winter that'd taken its pick of lives from the Brotherhood. She hated not working. If she wasn't busy, she was lost in her grief, lost in the memories of her mother. She couldn't have that.
Sadatoni sniffed again, breathing in the scents of the forest. As usual, the tangy aroma of herbs caught her attention first, and then the rich smell of blood from the latest hunt. The Hunters must've dragged their kill down this path to the Sanctuary. No matter how many times she scolded them for trampling her gardens, they never listened. Perhaps their brashness just couldn't be dulled.
A new scent caught her attention just as she turned to head back to the main trail. It was light, and sweet, and came with the gentle flap of wings against the air. She cocked her head, scanning the forest. Out of the corner of her eye, a flash of orange darted into the brush. Sadatoni frowned curiously, following suit.
The orange flash led her down a rarely taken trail through the taiga woodlands. A familiar feeling of dread began to creep into her bones, nearly stopping her in her tracks as she gave chase. She persisted still, heart pounding against her chest not out of exhaustion but out of fear.
This was the path she'd taken to bury her mother.
Sadatoni held her breath as the orange flash appeared before her again. She prayed, not knowing who she wanted her hopes answered by. She did not want to take that turn into the clearing. She could not - she wasn't sure if she'd be able to bear that pain again.
As if mockingly, the creature darted toward the place she dreaded. Sadatoni shook her head, sighing as she stood. Whatever was waiting for her in that clearing, she knew it was inevitable.
Sadatoni released her breath, and padded down the dirt trail to her mother's grave.
The clearing was bright as she emerged from the parting forest. Flowers had bloomed all around the tree-line, already supplying the native bee population with their nectar. She pushed through the wall of flowers, careful not to tread too hard.
She remembered her mother's favorite saying as she did so. It's an Herbalist's duty to have a light foot. The rocks may forgive your harshness, but the plants never forget.
She frowned at the bittersweet memory, making her way toward the disturbed patch of dirt in the center of the clearing. A tower of rocks laid solitary before the grave, the beginning sprouts of ivy already starting to climb around it. Small wildflowers and mushrooms circled the patch.
Sadatoni brushed away some debris that'd covered the top of the stone tower, the faint trace of a smile flickering over her face as she saw the depiction of Er Rai that Aldebaran had carved into the surface. To remember her by. Why was everyone else so alright with remembering her?
She sat, tail brushing against her paws. She had memories of her mother, of course. Everyone in the Brotherhood did. But nobody else was saddened by them. Nobody else found themselves enveloped by their own grief over just the mention of her name. In the moon after her death, Sadatoni had never felt more alone.
And now she was beside her grave, for the first time since it'd been dug. She didn't know if she should feel guilt or relief that she'd finally had the strength to visit after so long. She realized that she did not want to know the answer.
Aldebaran had told her once, that the best way to feel at peace was to feel both nothing at all and everything at once. To experience every emotion and thought she had settling in her bones, so that she is left with a clear mind and lightness in her step. She let in a long draw of air, closing her eyes and calming her heart.
Almost at once, the emotions came flooding in. Every ounce of grief and distress she'd felt, all in one place. Her composure wavered, and she laid down to steady herself. Sadatoni was not one to shed a tear, but she did then. All of her sadness splashed against the ground, soaking into the earth.
Almost as soon as her feelings erupted, they drained out, leaving her empty. It was a calmness she hadn't felt before. To have no baggage, nothing holding her down.
She opened her eyes, blinking away the remnants of tears that'd coated her cheeks. The dirt beneath her head was wet with it. She sat back up, shaking the dust from her fur.
Suddenly, the familiar orange flash caught her eye again. It was a monarch butterfly, brilliantly colored, perched oh so delicate atop the memorial stone tower. Its wings brushed over the carving, the light dancing off of them and reflecting onto the rock.
Sadatoni leaned forward, resting her chin on the top stone. The butterfly fluttered to her, sitting on her muzzle. Its wings tickled her nose, and she sneezed, feeling a childish joy that she hadn't felt for a long time.
She laughed, standing and bouncing around the clearing. The butterfly, miraculously, followed her.
Sadatoni left as dusk approached. She stood by the wall of trees, staring back at her mother's grave with a new sense of purpose in her heart. She still grieved, but her sorrow was melded into her soul and bones. It was a part of her, and she was a part of it. Her mother was always with her, and she knew that now.
So why not live a little?
As you walk through the caverns of the Dawnstar Sanctuary, you find yourself led down a short corridor by the strangest scent to ever grace your senses.
"Hello?" You call out, sighing as your own voice answers you in an echo.
"Oh, what's this?"
You spin around, hackles rising as two bright olive eyes suddenly illuminated in the faint cracks of sunlight that shimmered down from the ceiling of the cave. A nimble ginger wolf stepped down from a ledge that you didn't even know existed, the sweet scent of herbs wafting from her fur as she approached.
"Ah, so you're who the Night Mother invited." She watches you as she passes, muscles rippling against her sleek fur. "My name is Sadatoni. I am the Herbalist of the Dark Brotherhood." You frown, realizing that even the wolves sworn to be healers could easily take you down in a matter of seconds.
"I don't know what you were hoping to see here in my corner of the Sanctuary, but no matter. Get out, before I mix your blood into one of my poultices."
