Augurd's life has been a rollercoaster of sorts. He had no pack, and only had his family. Since his father had left them long ago, Augurd and his mother acted as the parental guardians of the family; caring for the young ones.
Sadly, the life he once knew abruptly came to an end. His entire family was wiped out due to the Great Cold, which brought famine and freezing temperatures to their lands. Augurd, somehow, was the only one that survived. During those years, which seemed like generations, he ventured alone. Every day seemed like it would be his last. He survived off of scraps- digging up any animals that had been buried in the snow and ice.
He then faced another tragedy. The snow, which always seemed to brightly glisten no matter what time it was, had damaged his vision.
This seemed to be his fate. A death he could not escape. He seemed to wander pointlessly, desperately searching for anything to give him the slightest bit of hope. But how could he see what would somehow give him hope?
All seemed hopeless at this point. He had enough. He made his final decision, to let himself succumb to this endless winter. As he laid, waiting for the snow to bury him and mark his grave, he saw a bright luminescence peering through the blizzard.
You're time is not done.
Adrenaline suddenly coursed through his veins. He shook himself off, and followed the light. Familiar scents began to flood his senses. As he paced faster, warm sunlight shone upon his tattered pelt, which made his spine tingle and fur stand on end.
But above all, one thing was for sure. He could finally see.
As he was drinking in the sights and smells of his new surroundings, a rustle from the thicket caught his attention. His ear instinctively swiveled towards the noise, and he whirled around. A small, lithe figure stood before him. Another wolf.
The wolf began to question him about his whereabouts, looking over his scrawny frame with a concerned look. Augurd steadily explained what had happened to him, and her concerned look faded into an expression of horror. She introduced herself as Alfbern, and suddenly fled back into the forest. He stood, dumbfounded.
At a steady pace, he began to follow her scent trail. As the scent became closer, he could make out another scent. A male, he presumed. The scent was different than any male he'd known before. Before long, he saw the familiar frame of the small she-wolf, Alfbern. She seemed to be padding beside a large, muscular wolf. As he met up with Alfbern, the male gave him a wary glance.
"So, you say this wolf came from a Great Cold?" He rumbled.
"Yes. But don't you see? He's the scrawniest wolf I've ever seen." Alfbern remarked.
The male nodded, examining him over.
"We haven't had one of those in centuries. I've heard many tales from our elders about it. Come, now."
As Augurd followed the two wolves, the male introduced himself as Riot, Alpha of the Crimson Fang Pack. He had been leading them for years, and began to talk about their past leaders and his own experience as leader. Augurd felt oddly entranced by the stories Riot told- a strong connection he never experienced before.
As they got back to the pack, he was given time to rest. Over time, he steadily gained weight and built back muscle. He was then positioned as a hunter for the Crimson Fang Downwinders. Since he lived with a relatively small family before, he did all the hunting, and could take down large prey easily. Many wolves were impressed- even Riot- and he was positioned as a lead hunter for his hunting guild. Augurd grew very close to Alfbern, and the two became mates.
As Riot grew older, he made Augurd his heir. Augurd became an outstanding leader- caring and guiding those, as he did with his family. Although his family was gone, he felt that this is where he belonged. That this, was his family.

The Great Cold is a legend in which wolves become entranced in a delusional state. This can happen to many wolves at once. This causes the wolf to experience reactions similar to getting trapped in an ice age. Wolves often die from their bodily reactions. (Freezing, starvation, blindness, etc…)
They often lose their sense of smell or sight, which makes tracking down prey almost impossible. This often creates a false sense of famine. However, over time (typically months to years), the wolf's state of mind returns back to normal, if they have survived.
