Biography
Winter [I] — "Dusty was starving, frozen, and lost in a blizzard. He'd gotten turned around shortly after he'd begun heading down the mountain. He'd seen a dense pine forest at its base earlier that day, before the snow started. Hopefully he'd make it there before nightfall."
Autumn [II] — "Dusty and his daughter were hunting a huge turkey tom. They had it trapped in a large meadow, and were deciding how to end the hunt.
'I'll sneak over to that fallen tree, at the other end of the clearing. Once I'm there, go after the bird. He should run right to me. If he swerves—'
'We corner him!' Dusty whispered.
Gale nodded excitedly. Then she stalked into the forest, keeping to the shadows.
~
Their plan had gone sour. The turkey had evaded Gale, but instead of swerving to the side, it had rushed right at Dusty. He'd pounced, of course, but the tom dodged Dusty's attack, leaving him sprawled in the grass. Sprinting after the turkey, Gale couldn't see her father's phone form among the dead leaves. One minute the turkey was in her sights, the next, her head was buried in a pile of red and yellow."
Autumn [III] — "'Dusty!' His mate was calling him frantically from outside the den. 'What's wrong? Are you okay?' He barked back. Doe poked her head inside. 'Did Gale leave with the scouts? I can't find her anywhere. Her scent's stale.' He stumbled outside, still half asleep. The sun was just beginning to rise, and the scouts were long gone by now. 'She didn't say anything to me about leaving, but why are you so worried?' Doe sighed. 'Remember what Echo told us the day she joined the pack? That's why I'm worried. I was skeptical at first, but the forest's been too different lately.'
Dusty wandered through the territory in the dead of winter. He's stayed with the pack ever since.
