Nanook

Nanook's mother, only a faint memory now, used to tell him stories of a constellation made of six stars, Mephitis, roughly resembling the shape of a tooth. She used to point it out and tell him it can be seen just above the Northwestern horizon of the prairie just after autumn's equinox.

His father, long gone and forgotten, told him how this constellation is a representation of the greatest wolf scout to have ever lead the Vanished Banes. His father, Dutch, he remembers, tells him that astrology is the key to scouting.

Nanook shares this now with Kaine, his partner in scouting. He shares the stories of Mephitis and his deeds and answers Kaine's questions. He tells Kaine, the young, enthusiastic new scout that Jinx had handed over to him with a nod and a lick, of the constellations looking like a candle, cannonball and wave, and that they don't match with those born underneath the lobster and crow.

He shares this information later to his apprentice, Breeze, just as he had with Kaine when he was young.

His mother, Opal, born to Lightcrown Clan, was a brilliant she-wolf, and a beautiful one at that. She was taken from him when he was too young, and his only memories are of his father.

Nanook hopes, lying next to Jinx, heavy with his pups, that he will be there for his litter.

In his old age, now, he spends his days lazing in the sun with Mako, the other elder of the pack, telling the youngest of the pack stories as their mothers work, finding herbs and watching over the new puppies.
