厚子 Atsuko

Elm or 厚子 Atsuko, lit. meaning kind child but comes from the Ainu word 厚子 Atsushi, or clothes made from Elm wood fibers. The more common writing is「厚司 Atsushi」while 「厚子 Atsuko」is a common girls name and can be written many ways, 「楡」Nire is the actual word for Elm in Japanese. カムイフチ Kamuy-huci, the Ainu goddess of the hearth, is said to have been born from an Elm tree by the prime originator, Kanda-koro-kamuy. Although there are many myths about her orgin, including descending from the heavens, with Kanna Kamuy, the kamuy of thunder and lightning. In another version, she was born from the fire-producing drill and is the sister of Hasinaw-uk-kamuy, the goddess of the hunt. Kamuy-huci lives in the hearth and position is so important that she never leaves her home. Accordingly, the hearth fire must never be extinguished completely. She guardian of the home, and also the judge of domestic affairs. Those who pollute a hearth or fail to maintain proper domestic relationships are said to incur her punishment. To aid her in these duties, since she does not leave the hearth, she employs a number of other Kamuy. In addition to being the center of the Ainu household, the hearth was considered a gateway by means of which humans and kamuy could communicate. It is also the abode of the dead; the Ainu word for ancestor translates as "those who dwell in the hearth." Transmigration is a tenet of Ainu mythology, so it was doubly important for the hearth to be kept pure, because the souls of the departed who lived there would be assigned to new bodies in time.
Wych elms were a much more common elm species in the north and west of the British Isles and is now acknowledged as the only indisputably British native elm species. Owing to its former abundance in Scotland, the tree is occasionally known as the Scotch or Scots elm; Loch Lomond is said to be a corruption of the Gaelic Lac Leaman interpreted by some as 'Lake of the Elms', 'leaman' being the plural form of leam or lem, 'elm'.

Her mates name, 天皇 放射熱 Tenno Hōshanetsu, comes from the Kaijū Gappa's "Radiant Heat Beam" 放射熱光線 Hōshanetsu Kōsen. A 4,000-degree Celsius beam comparable to a death ray shot from the mouth, and also thought to give the Gappas immunity to poison.
