Deerleap was a dutiful little boy who enjoyed listening to others, whether he was supposed to or not. One day, he tried to give his pupsitter Lightningflash advice on a problem she was having with a packmate. She knew she hadn't told him anything about it, but it turned out that he had overheard her discussing it with one of her sisters. Another time, a sibling told him that they were going down to the creek by themselves. He was quick to tell Lightningflash and she was able to save the other pup from drowning. This earned him a reputation as a tattletale, but Lightningflash knew that caring for packmates that way was the mark of a true Alpha.

At the Academy, Deer studied smarts with all his siblings, but then branched out on his own and studied speed and agility. The lesson on bird watching was his favorite because he got to sit and watch the behavior of other creatures. He didn't want to disturb them or hurt them, but trying to catch them was part of the lesson. He got a lecture for missing on purpose twice. Gentleness is a virtue, but it won't serve a predator's survival, especially if he has a pack to provide for.

During his apprenticeship, Deer was sent to observe and help with hunting. That helped to build up his strength and speed in preparation for his duties as Alpha. He was never told that he would be Alpha, but it wasn't hard to figure out from the differences in how he was treated. Listening and noticing the behavior of others made many things clear. He never told anyone that he figured it out either. He respected the secrecy of the heir choice. And he suspected that everyone else knew anyway.

Now as an adult, Deer still seems to hear everything, but there's no longer any need for tattling. Now he's the one being tattled to, and all the decisions are on him. Ever since the lunar tear pendant was placed around his neck, he has been devoted to the well-being of the Pack. He does his best to make the right choices for them always. When he's unsure, he thinks back to his puppyhood and remembers his sister Brightheart telling him that he would be a great Alpha one day. Her continued faith in him inspires him every day and his other sister Snowwind is a wise and dependable Beta. He often reminds himself that the entire Pack rests on the loving legacy of his great-grandparents, Darkflame and Honeyheart. Their strength and love for their Pack live in Deer's heart every day.
