Biography
"Why can't you come back? Where did we go wrong?"
Nightshade is the oldest and most experienced of her six other siblings. With her being the oldest child of Amarasu, the mate to their old Alpha, she was expected to help wrangle the other pups. Despite Amarasu being kind, she didn't think of how this would affect her oldest.
Instead of spending her own time training as a younger wolf, she was doing what her mother instructed her to do. Still, this caused her own understandable bitterness towards her mother. This came to a head when she reached adolescent age and was going to begin being mentored under an older chaser at the time. Despite her siblings being close to adolescent age themselves, she still was told to keep an eye on them. This interfered with her own training as a chaser.
A morning when Nightshade was supposed to be lead a chasing team, her mother tried to call her back to help watch her siblings due to the fact that she needed to go with Amarok, the Alpha at the time, to a meeting with some of their oldest pack members. After the constant distractions and putting off her own training, the young she-wolf exploded. The argument seemed to last forever.
"It's not my responsibility to pupsit your own children!"
It ended with the two wolves avoided each other, getting into occasional spats as Nightshade focused on her training. The two never made up.
It was a new moon, in the dead of winter when Amarasu died. The older wolf didn't even die from the cold. She was trying to bring in scraps of food so the pack could survive, being in a small group with other wolves as she did so. They hunted close to another territory's border, and she didn't stand a chance. Not with the weather and her older age. They slaughtered her like a lamb.
The other wolves in the group fought as best as they could, though they had to retreat back to their home, in which the pack was told of her death. Amarok, angered by grief, led some wolves, including Nightshade herself, back to Amarasu's body. By the time they got their, her body was so, so, cold. Her fur was started to get encrusted in the rapidly growing snow.
Nightshade had to help dig her mother out of the snowbank, and it was the most traumatic experience of her life. Amarok and Nightshade shouldered her weight together as the wolves slowly trekked back to their camp.
When the burial was over and days passed, Nightshade remained in vigil by her grave still, thinking of all of the regrets she had with her mother.
It was easier, at times, to argue with her rather than potentially making up, despite Amarasu's advances to do so as she grew older. Because, despite everything, she was still proud of her pup. She always was.
Nightshade has never forgiven herself. She still thinks about what she could have done differently.
"I'm sorry, for everything...I know you tried. I should have tried harder..."
"I hope to see you again one day, chasing deer among the stars."
