Biography
The gray wolf huffed under his breath, "If there is magic, does it exist?"
"No point in asking yourself. Ask Alpha." Another came up from behind and sat down next to the pondering wolf. The green valley stretched out before the Pointer Dew Pack. It was a nice sight. Birds twittered with songs and wind gently ruffled the tall grass, providing a sweet scent.
"Come quick!" A quick howl broke the peaceful silence. The two jumped and bolted over to one entrance of the cave. A sweet scent penetrated the air. Pulled from pondering the future, the two wolves ran to the entrance of the cave. There, in the moss, laid a few small pups. Their mother was whining happily and looked towards the others.
"What a sight."
The Alpha mused as he stepped forward. His nose swept over the pups. The mother nodded along and sighed.
"Go ahead and choose a name for them. I trust the decisions will be good."
The Alpha hummed deeply. He caught sight of a particular pup lying some inches away from his paw.
Its coat was a shiny, like a rock that had been polished for safekeeping. Rustic, tinted, and soft were its features. No wolf in the pack had such kind of fur. The father of the pups sighed as he laid his head on his paws. Since the spring, the food had seemed scarce. Raising a family was a main concern of his. But if the Alpha was okay with it, why would it matter?
"Milow." The Alpha hummed, as he poked the pup with his paw. "The name suits him well."
In turn, each of Milow's siblings received their names. The sun held high in the sky, offering a warmth the wolves basked in for the day. Rivers ran gently over the rocks, squirrels skittered about, and clouds moved lazily over the sky.
The rest of the pack rolled about in the tall grass, allowing themselves a break from hunting and guarding their territory.
Unnoticed by the others, another wolf crouched down to the dirt, eyes glowing with hatred. How could she?
"Damn it." He huffed. In a single stride, he dashed off deeper into the woods, mind ablaze with thoughts so fierce, it would have set the trees alight with fire.
The day continued into the night, prompting the owls to sing their greetings to the moon. The Alpha laid comfortably on top of his rock, listening to the others converse in their own ways of playing and singing.
If anything were to change, it would only have to be the weather. Right?
------------------------------------------------------------
3 Months Later
"You traitor!" The wolf howled with anger. Just across the territory line, a standoff was going down hard.
The Pointer Dew Pack was standing tense as they stood against the male wolf. Heat pierced the fur of the wolves, making the atmosphere seem like the surface of the sun. The male bared his teeth. His haunches were so tense, it looked as though he was about to spring forward and attack right then.
"Enough!" The Alpha hissed and turned towards the mother wolf. "What is he talking about?"
No reply.
"Answer me!" A sharp snarl cut through the wolf's eardrums.
Cowering, the mother flattened her ears and whimpered. She obediently laid flat on the ground, eyes downcast and submissive.
"I… I wasn't telling the truth earlier. He's the one I meant when I said I was expecting."
Dead silence. It seemed like the regular forest sounds returned, only to be broken by the father's outcry.
"You mean to say those are not mine!" Eyes of brown ignited into a powerful flame of disgust and anger. The mother flattened herself even more into the ground.
The male wolf watched the scene unfold, somewhat content and angry at the same time.
The Alpha started with contemptment at the mother. It was against the law to have any type of relationship outside the pack. For her to do this… meant death.
"I am so sorry." She whispered, whining escaping her throat.
The father snarled and lunged forward, claws at the ready.
The rest of the pack instantly retreated; they knew they could do nothing between a pair.
A painful cry echoed through the air. Even the male wolf was shocked by the sight. Trails of blood dripped to the ground as the mother wolf cried. Sharp canines pierced her skin, creating uncontrollable spasms of pain radiating through her neck and back. The feeling of claws raking across her side made her dizzy and sick.
The father wolf bore down on her, forcing her to a pinned position. The Alpha remained quiet.
"You.. you.. you liar! Everything I've done, everything I have tried to give you, you threw to the paws of another wolf who isn't a part of the pack. No wonder that one had a different coat… No wonder they all looked different. Because of this, what should I do with you?"
The father's voice contained a barely held back burst of anger sure to kill anything.
The male wolf stood rigidly, not knowing what to do. He caused the issue, but resolving it was a whole other problem in itself.
"Step back, now." The Alpha broke in, finally coming forward. His head was tilted to the side a little, as though he was pondering a great question. The father wolf slinked away reluctantly. The stains of blood painted his paws red, which left dark brown marks in the ground. It seemed even the sky noticed the change, as it darkened to a dangerous color of gray. The air tightened with a grip of iron. The scent of blood wafted through the air, making the pack shiver.
"Breaking pack law is something I do not tolerate. As such, punishment includes death. For the past year, I have seen your worth, your talent, your usage. You have two choices: either I dispose of the pups, or you are killed. Choose now." The Alpha spoke as though he were just giving a regular speech.
Every wolf stood still, furs standing to their tips. The male wolf opened his mouth to speak, but shut it when a wolf shot a look of shut-up.
Hanging her head, the mother began to shake. Her body trembled with the thought of losing her pups, but the threat of death weighed heavy on her heart. She looked to the others for help, but they turned their heads and flattened their ears.
The father wolf only growled and snarled, on the edge of losing it again.
The male wolf started, emotions mixing in his eyes.
Closing her eyes she spoke with a quiver.
"Chase."
The pups watched from afar, especially Milow…
------------------------------------------------------------
The Next Day
I looked in confusion as the Alpha nudged me to the edge of the territory. I looked back at mother, who was sitting still. Her ears still pressed against her ears, tears flowed from her eyes. Father wolf was glaring a death look, and the other pack members were watching with sad eyes. The past month had been so happy. Why did it come to this?
After pushing the final pup away, the Alpha sighed and suddenly roared with a powerful howl.
"If you want to live, RUN!"
Just the tone alone scared me into running. I took a final glance at the pack as the land flew from my paws.
No one seemed to be intending to stop us. But a look from father wolf scared me to lengths beyond thinkable. Fear flowed through my hot veins.
The sunlight paved the way for the pups and they ran. Even at three months old, they seemed to understand the word run.
My legs gave out. Collapsing onto the ground, rapid breaths were all I could hear for a while. What just happened?
Snatches of the past could be heard in my ears. A strange sound seemed to infiltrate my head and irritated my nerves.
Singing? Humming? Drawling?
I couldn't tell. All I wanted was water and rest.
A few hours later, I found a stream to drink from. I tiredly laid down. My siblings had all scattered when they ran, making sure they would be lost forever. In one swoop, I had lost the pack, mother, father, and siblings. It was worse than not having enough to eat.
Speaking of which, I was starving. The last meal was lunch. By now, it was dinner. The sun had set, and it was getting cold.
Unable to properly stand, I dragged myself over to a pile of grass. It smelled of rainwater: a familiar yet strange scent.
Fatigue swept over him like a wind gust. The air cooled and the ground became quiet. Owls hooted and the occasional howl of a wolf sounded through the wind. It was a normal night, at least for the pack.
Afraid of his fate, I forced myself to stand.
I broke into a run, desperately looking for a form of shelter. The night scared me, as did it to any pup. Why was this happening?
The wind struck the my face, making me squint my glowing purple eyes. The stars shone above, silently cheering me forward into the future I feared so. To what extent would I run? I didn't know.
Darkness swept over the land like water over a rock. Nightly noises made their way to Milow's ears, prompting him to flatten them against his head and whine.
Stomach growling, I nibbled on a few sticks with berries on them. It wasn't as if it was good, but it was something. The dirt under me was cold and dusty. I sneezed. The sound seemed to echo a mile away. Unsettled, I tried to cover myself under a thorn bush.
Coldness crept into his paws, and his breath became shaky. Sleep fled from me, making the time pass even slower. Curling into a ball, I tucked my head under my paws as silent tears dripped down to the ground.
Nothing could be worse…
I had just fallen asleep I think when a death cry startled me to death. Ignoring the thorns stuck in my paws, I leaped out of the brush, wildly running around in a random direction. From what my parents had taught me, running was the only choice when fighting was not an option.
Wind pulled against my body, as if trying to stop me from escaping.
Tears flew from my eyes as I realized those cries came from my siblings. Pain tore through the heart and burned my veins. Why? Just why did this happen?
I kept running when I suddenly slammed into a solid figure.
Scampering away, I cried and tucked my tail between my legs. The figure seemed to move, making my fear skyrocket.
"I suppose it's about time you stopped for a break." The voice sounded sweet and hollow.
My ears naturally perked a little. It was another wolf, but none of the ones he was familiar with.
"Come on, little one. I won't hurt you."
A light penetrated the surrounding area, almost blinding me. Still terrified, I stayed in one place. Eventually, curiosity won out, forcing me to crawl forward.
Adjusting to the scene, I was met with the sight of a beautiful wolf of white and gold dust. She seemed to leave a trail of light behind her. I couldn't tell if she was real or not. Who was she?
"Call me Magic." She said gently. Her eyes glistened with tenderness and a motherly presence.
My tail wagged involuntarily.
Magic looked at me with interest.
"You have beautiful eyes. The colors of purple mixed with gold and yellow. The tints of white and deep browns are captivating. And your fur.. Your fur is nothing short of amazing."
She stepped closer to me. I backed away, not willing to let her get close.
"No need to worry. I will not hurt you. I am here to help you." Magic cooed.
Despite my distrust, I let her come near. She bent down, causing flakes of gold to fall to the ground. Her scent was sweet and mellowed. It let me relax, surprisingly.
"Such a coat deserves more, no? I have been watching you, and I can see you have potential. Do you know why you are here?"
I couldn't tell if she was serious or not. I stared at the ground, with no answer on my muzzle.
"Hm. You deserve more." She hummed and smiled a little, lifting the corner of her mouth. I watched as she stepped away a few feet. Her entire body began to glow with a piercing color of yellow and green.
I jumped away, sure I was going to be killed.
A sensation of fuzziness bowled over me, making my head go spinning. The air was twisted into a mixture of grass and lavender.
A cloudy vision took over my eyes, and I struggled to determine where I was. It was only a moment, but it felt like an hour to my struggling heart.
"There. What do you think?" Magic looked back at me, eyes still alight.
I couldn't feel anything, so I shook my head.
"Look." She pointed with her paw towards the lake's surface.
The sight caught me off guard.
I was… different.
My fur had changed from its reddish color to a sleek pattern of clover green and an intricate mix of white and hints of blue. It was as if she had pulled the very light from the moon and cast it into my fur.
My eyes were similar, only they let off wisps of pink and white.
What happened to me?
"Life is unforgiving to ways we cannot understand. But to those who try, there is no limit to finding those answers. Hold onto the part of you that is cherished by the paws of those you love. Where there is loss, there is gain."
Magic spoke to me in ways I couldn't understand. She just rambled on as we walked into the unknown.
"Your peace is valued above the others who keep their hearts to their own. I think there is a peace all can have, but reaching it is more than just living as is…"
I was tired, having walked all night with no break. As much as I wanted to leave her, the comfort she gave was what was keeping me next to her side. Her voice kept me awake.
She paved a light I could feel. Her words were soft and calm, and her eyes gentle. It was something I wanted from my parents.
"We are here." Magic stopped and turned to me.
I hadn't noticed the land had changed considerably. From the valleys to the mountains we had walked. Did we really walk this far?
I doubted my memory, but Magic nodded encouragingly.
"Your memory does serve you well. This pack will become your refuge, your home, your life."
In a blink, I was alone, standing on the edge of the territory she said I would love.
And out of thin air, a wolf of gray and white stood before my paws.
Her eyes cast off a glow of welcomeness. I found her presence to be similar to Magic's, which I felt was nice to feel.
Wagging her tail, she lifted the corners of her mouth.
"Welcome, Milow. I am Snowdrop. Welcome to the Noel Winter Eve Pack."
