Ashbreeze was a capable little girl who never wanted to be held down by anyone. She loved to run off and explore. If a Nursury headcount was short one pup, it was always Ash. Her mom and pupsitter Dustflight did their best to keep her under control, but they weren't always successful. She managed to slip out one morning and took off after a squirrel into the woods. She was missing for hours until some careful tracking by her aunt Firelight located her stuck in a bramble thicket almost a mile away. She was rescued and scolded, but not deterred. The very next day, she was out again.

At the Academy, Ash was content to stay put for her lessons, as long as they held her interest. But a moment's boredom would have her trying to sneak away. Her teachers had to keep an extra close watch on her to make sure she didn't get away. She was assigned to study agility and speed in preparation for chasing work. But when it came to the last lesson, Dustflight decided to assign that too instead of letting her choose. Her elders knew that the Pathfinding lesson would be the most helpful, to keep her safe and help her find her way home when she wandered off.

During her apprenticeship, Ash went out on the trail with her mom and the other hunters every day to learn what chasing was all about. Or at least, she was supposed to. She would still sneak away sometimes at first. But then, on a day when the apprentices were helping to conduct a hunt, Ash got distracted by an interesting scent and left her chasing position. With a gap in the formation, the prey had room to escape. One of the adults was injured trying to stop it and the hunt failed. When Ash finally returned home, Alpha Deerleap scolded her harder than she'd ever been scolded before. Someone could have died and it would have been her fault. Ash's mom was so disappointed. Ash realized then that she couldn't keep letting her pack down. She would have to give up being the runaway puppy she had been and finally start pulling her weight. From then on, her apprenticeship went much better and her change of heart was appreciated by her elders.

Now as an adult, Ash is devoted to her work and sticks to the trail and her teammates all day. But when work is done, nothing can keep her in the den, not even the promise of great fermented barley. Her packmates joke that she should have been a scout, but Ash knows that what she's doing is different from scouting. She just wanders around aimlessly, lost in thought, sometimes well into the night. On occasion, when she's been out too late, she needs to be woken in the morning for work.
