Biography
The gravestone is old, and moss grows within the cracks of the andesite, though the stone gleams with the love of careful paws and polish. The moonlight glows dully from the headstone, but the stone glints with the twinkling of stars. As your paws hit the soft clay and moss before the mound, the headstone flashes with a gentle glow and the ghost of Smiles with Teeth rises from the stone. She wags her tail, staring at the stone with an almost sad smile that she turns to you.
"This magic always reminds me of the world we know so little of. The world my great grandmother came to fear."
She breathes in deep, and raises her snout to the sky, taking in a gulp of the dark night wind.
"I hope that my ancestors, and my dear daughter, have done better... could you point out her grave to me, please...?"
You tilt your head, wondering why she can't see the marble gravestone beside hers, but you walk over to it anyways, and press your paw on the smooth tile. Smiles' eyes gleam with joy, and her whole body seems to slump with relief.
"Good, her grave is well taken care of, it must mean that she was truly loved by our pack... thank you, stranger. Are you here for my wisdom? I must warn you, though... I may remember the most out of all of my ancestors, perhaps because I've had the most resonance and time to fuse with Lunar magic, but my memory is still... negligible, despite my attempts to keep record and remember."
You nod, and her ears lower with an enthusiastic wag.
I remember very little of my childhood, but I remember my mother. I remember how much she loved me and cared for me, and how warm and happy those summer nights by the lake with her and my siblings were. And I remember the grief and rage I felt when she chased my mother away. I was still just a pup.
My elders at the time said it was because of jealousy-- that my mother was able to produce me, an heir suitable with Voice of Teeth's red-eye blessing, while she could only produce pups born without the blessing. I believe true hatred played a role in it, too. Honeyed Teeth was... she became a pack leader too young, left without the guidance of her mother in the dead of winter, in a struggling pack. She was supposedly a very sweet pup before her mother's passing, very bright and enthusiastic and showing great promise. But the weight of leadership changed her, especially what happened during..."
Smiles with Teeth's form flickers like an ethereal shudder, and you can feel the temperature around both of you cool as icy frost nips at the tips of the greenery around you. Her face is twisted with emotion, far removed from the kind face of a gentle wolf you'd just gotten to know. It makes the red of her eyes gleam, and large teeth yellowed with age and cracked by past forces pull from her lips like knives pull from a dagger. Some invisible but visceral breeze seems to sooth the swell of negative energy from her, making the little icy crystals that had begun clawing up your paw retreat an melt away, soaking into the moss below. The earth feels wet between your paw pads.
"Forgive me for that, I... have always been prone to bursts of energy when... excitable. My pack considers it our matriarch's blessing intended to... aid us, in times of need. But none of that now, you're here for our history..."
"There was... an incident, known as Coigreach. My great grandmother, she... in order to end it, she had a choice, and she chose to sacrifice a pup from our pack... her own. My elders think that was the last hardship her battered soul could endure, after struggling so hard to keep her pack alive during times of famine and starvation, disasters natural and not. It drove her mad, and... when the time came that her madness drove away the last bit of the kind soul she had once been..."
You notice, with a start, that something is dripping from her mouth. She gives you a faint smile, but it doesn't reach her eyes, even as her head tilts and her eyes narrow, it feels more unsettling than comforting, no matter how warm the gesture may be. The air smells like copper, and the liquid seeping from her mouth is dark red.
"... I was the one to make sure she passed away swiftly. For whatever kind wolf she may have once been, rather than a monster devoured by magic and grief. For a time, it made me hate magic. I believed that its unnatural quality drove the best of us mad. But after my time as a leader, I understand now that the magic isn't the problem-- it's the wolves who wield it. I didn't understand that when I was younger, and as a result... we lost a lot of our Moon-Touched during my reign-- the wolves whose pelts are blessed with Lunar magic. I have also managed to boost our pack's economy, self-reliance, and relations with other packs, though we are still rather isolated. I have loved my daughter all that I could, and though I still passed on without her before her first year, I'm glad of the time I had with her. I hope she did all that she could with the gifts I have given her in order to aid with the long and troublesome road she will have to walk without me by her side, like I had to without my own mother..."
The deceased leader seems warm and kindly again, all scents of metal and dark substances swallowed by the impermanence of the air. Her smile is kind and sad, as she sees the translucence of her paws slowly melt away as the Lunar magic seeps back into the gravestone.
"It seems as though I've used up all my time again... how foolish of me, becoming so emotional instead of talking and sharing my knowledge..." Her smile becomes long and sad once more.
"... perhaps I'm more like my great grandmother than I thought... oh! But please, stranger, if you see my daughter... please be sure to tell her that I'm proud. I'm certain that she's made a remarkable leader and... tell her that I love her, please."
The last thing you see of Smiles with Teeth before she fades away are those crimson eyes, piercing and thoughtful, staring past you as though she were a mother looking at her newborn pup.
