Ivar's bones grew tired, his joints weary. The wings upon his back hung loose from fatigue, the grey flecked tips brushing the dust on the ground. In the distance, the setting sun cast its last shadows, painting the horizon red as he lay himself to rest for the final time.
Oeric stood by his side. The wolf he saw as his father, though they were not blood, gazed at him through clouded eyes. He sighed, his lids drooping, the corners of his mouth turning up in a slight smile for he knew his pack would be in safe paws.
His sides heaved laboriously, each breath harder than the next. His wings laying limp from his shoulders, encasing his shaggy frame like a blanket.
And with one final shudder, drew his last breath.
Oeric choked back emotion, carefully trotting to the edge of the den. And standing over the packs territory, threw back his head. Letting a single wavering note into the sky. Taking his new place as lead.
