Mirage: The Wondering Healer
A wolf of fiery reds and pinks, accented with blue and flecks of green, wonders through the muddy, flooded plains of the swamp. Weaving her way through the mangrove while dodging crocodiles that attempt to make a meal out of her, the sunset pelted wolf was determined on her journey.
Dandelions and guaiacum were blooming on the little islands of lush green grass separated by the many rivers flowing through the land. The she wolf leapt towards one of these smaller patches, landing just a foot in front of the river behind her. Mirage didn't like to swim despite the location she made her home in, but she has managed to keep her fur mostly dry. Mirage snipped off the herbs at the stems, gathering a mouthful and leaving the roots intact for them to grow back in a few months.
The sunset pelted she wolf was a wondering healer. Though she was born in the swamp, she spends more time trading herbs and offering her services to wolves in the northern regions. Mirage didn't like the cold much however, as it was different from her hot and humid homeland.
Leaping gracefully through the muddy lands, Mirage made it to the misty mangrove where her den is. Sliding into a hole in a large tree, the she wolf placed down her findings on a wooden shelf she had carved out from the inside of the tree. Her den was neatly organised, and she had a small storage of medicine she had crafted recently that she keeps in case of emergency.
As the sun began to set, faint howling echoed through the fog that engulfed this part of the swamp. Mirage was fast asleep, paying no attention to the creatures of the night whose howls and shrieks pierced the silence of the night ever so often. This was her home, and she found the calls of the animals kind of soothing.
In the middle of the night, Mirage got up to drink. She keeps leaf bowls of fresh water in her den near constantly but she forgot to refill the bowls earlier in the day. Mirage had to travel all the way back to the marsh lands where the water wouldn't be so murky and salty. On her way back after the drink, a sudden howl echoed through the dense fog of the swamp. Mirage jumped, looking around until she spotted the source of the noise.
"Who are you?" She eyed the strange wolf, sniffing from a distance. A female..she thought, remaining in place with a tall posture. The stranger approached with a low posture, revealing her yellow pelt with green and blue shades. Her red eyes staring into Mirage's. A chill ran down her spine as she realized the bone and fang attire the wolf wore on her body, as well as the cape of what she thought was a grizzly pelt. The wolf gave her a small lick on the ear, which made her take a step back.
Understanding her unease, the wolf backed up a little before giving Mirage a friendly smile. "Hello, I am Sahara. Queen of my pack in Deciduous forest." The yellow pelted she wolf spoke calmly but in an informative tone. "I'm Mirage." She lowered her head in respect, still keeping an eye on the she wolf.
"I'm on a little quest to find a safe place in this territory for my pack." Sahara said, and Mirage had an idea. "If you are looking for a safe territory, you could try making your home here." The sunset pelted she smiled. "This land is free territory- not occupied by anyone yet." Sahara's ears perked up at that. "Thank you," the queen dipped her head. "This will make moving in hopefully easier. Minus all the snakes and crocodiles." She chuckled, which got a giggle out of Sahara too.
"If you plan on moving here, just be aware I have a den nearby. Don't want to disturb your pack or anything, but I also don't plan on moving either." Mirage finally said, hoping the queen would understand. "Ah, I'll make sure my pack doesn't trouble you. But, if you wish, you are allowed to join our pack." Sahara gave a friendly smile before walking off towards the north. Mirage was left to ponder. She had always been a loner since birth, but did she want to leave her traveler life behind? The sunset pelted she trotted up to the yellow pelted she wolf.
"Please, tell me more about your pack." Curious, she wanted to know what the pack was like before making her final decision. "Well, we are nomadic travelers. We originated from the Grasslands but we have been traveling through different biomes like older times in our pack." And that was all Mirage needed to hear. "I'd love to join! Let me get my stuff first!" Mirage yipped, dashing off to where her den was. After a few minutes, she came back with a satchel full of herbs and other medicines and Sahara lead her to northern deciduous forests where her pack currently resided.
Motherhood
After a few months spent in the pack, the sunset pelted she wolf gave birth to a litter of four. What Sahara didn't know was that Mirage was already pregnant when they first met. She was in very early stages of pregnancy, so there was no way to tell. The healer licked her newborns within the safety of her little tree den she had lived in for years in the swamp. Three mojaves and a dinar pup, and one of those mojaves decided to take on his mother's looks. Even having the same indigo eyes as her.
The pack cherished Mirage's pups, and she expected them to give her the cold shoulder for not declaring her pregnancy, as she is still learning the rules of this pack. Mirage was happy with the outcome though, and it was a good thing her den was also where she treated patients. She could keep watch of her pups at all times while doing her job. Mirage was a protective mother at first, but learned to let loose a little and watch her kids grow.
Her son, Sunset, grew to become a great scout in the pack. He had Mirage's cunning looks as well, which made her proud. Her other children left the pack to go join new ones, and she occasionally visited them. She was as proud as could be to discover she was a grandmother, and she went on to have two more litters of pups. All of them accept her newest litter leaving to to start their own lives somewhere else.
Cataclysms
Ever since storms and earthquakes began tearing the land, Mirage became more emotional. This was unusual since she was normally calm and collective. But now, she has lost her focus and her cool. Mirage spent much more time foraging and exploring, helping injured animals she ran into. She even found weird beasts of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Those creatures freaked her out, but she wondered if the dangerous weather was the cause of their appearance.
A week into the constant bad weather, shortly after spring arrived, droughts and heatwave ravaged the land. It wasn't even summer, so she feared what would happen if the summer months came around. The recent volcano erupting had drove her and the whole pack out of their home they had known for five alpha generations, and they were stuck as a wondering pack again. This time, none of the vacant territories Sahara and some of the scouts knew about were empty anymore. Infact, many were unsafe from the dangerous weather while others were infested with those fearsome beasts. Mirage's homelands weren't safe either.
The swamp was drying up, and Mirage's spirit completely broke. Everything was crashing down for her and her pack, and no one could do anything. Sahara spent almost all her time exploring the disaster stricken areas while her pack had to fend for themselves. Mirage and the former pack scouts had to step up to keep everyone safe, as they had the wits and knowledge to guide everyone.
A New Age
Mirage was now one of the most powerful wolves in the pack. The pack eventually forgave Sahara, realizing her disappearance was for the safety of not only their pack, but other packs. Mirage was slow to forgive as well, but she never held a grudge against her friend. The pack had to live in burrows under the trees that they had manually dug. These trees were planted generations ago originally to conceal the pack camp better from above. Now that the crater they called home was ruined by lava that eventually hardened, they left to the small cluster of trees nearby.
