Swiftfoot was a capable little boy who thought he knew it all. His made-up explanations for things often had his elders smiling or confused or both. His pupsitter Brightheart told him that it was okay to not know things. But whether he took it to heart or not, he still kept on with the behavior. His elders thought it was because it amused everybody and maybe he was trying to keep up with his funnier siblings, but he would never admit to that. The interesting thing was that if he really did know how something worked, he explained it beautifully. Brightheart thought that this would make him a good pupsitter and mentor when he was older.
At the Academy, Swift paid close attention to his teachers and tried to learn as much as he could. He asked Mentor Snowwind, who was in charge of the Academy, for special permission to split his study three ways instead of the traditional two. When she asked him why, he replied that he wanted to be a mentor like her. He couldn't just keep making things up, so he needed all the knowledge he could get. She granted his request and he studied speed, agility, and wisdom. His sister Sparksong was with him in this endeavor and they both studied hard.
During his apprenticeship, Swift stuck close to Snowwind and watched how she guided the puppies through their lessons. There was so much to learn, and Swift wasn't sure he could absorb it all. He didn't know how best to relate to the puppies and didn't want to say the wrong thing. But he felt that he had already committed to this and couldn't turn back. Then one day he cracked one of his lame jokes in class and the puppies broke down laughing. Swift was shocked, no one had ever thought his jokes were funny before. But the puppies seemed to respond to them and began to look up to Swift. Their admiration boosted Swift's confidence and he realized that this was indeed the right path for him.
On his first birthday, Swift celebrated alongside his siblings and cousins in the Grand Den. But when the fermented barley was passed around, he refused it. He told his elders that drinking would set a bad example for the puppies and a good teacher shouldn't do that. His packmates were impressed by his dedication and drank a toast in his honor.
Now as an adult, Swift's jokes are still as lame as they ever were. But he only tells them to his students and doesn't inflict them on other adults. He's known to be an excellent teacher throughout the region and more packs are sending their unwanted pups to the Academy than ever before. Swift's knack for explaining things helps the pups make sense of their lessons and life in general. Swift himself feels fulfilled and gratified by his job and he's happy with the direction he chose to take his life in. It's hard work, but knowing that all his needs are provided for by his packmates makes him feel more carefree and helps him focus on teaching.
