Mesa

The first and by far most experienced scout of the pack, Mesa was very well respected. In her younger days, it was quite common to bid her good luck on her travels and not see her for several moons later. She was and always had been extremely skilled in her role, though, and never failed to come back with riveting stories and exciting news about lands to come. One of her most notable adventures was her trip to scout up north, where she found the Tundra. Although an important discovery in the pack's history, it cost Mesa her right eye- as she described, a ruthless moose bull dug it out with his antlers and left nothing but a bloody gash in the side of her face.
Needless to say, the pack was very surprised to see her coming back with such an injury. She retired shortly after, due to the increasing difficulty of scouting new lands with only one eye. Luckily it was very late in her career, and as she retired she had an eager heir ready to take her place. Pine, her first son, was a very pleasant and agreeable young wolf. He was extremely charismatic, and though that may seem like a good trait for a scout to avoid any scuffles, it served to be the opposite.
Instead of going out and readying safe land for pack territory, he would meet wolves along his travels and settle with their pack for a while, often bringing wolves home with him. While Arashi was always happy to strengthen her growing pack, Pine just was not efficient enough to carry out his job as his mother did before him. So, after some careful consideration on both Mesa and Arashi's part, Pine was demoted. Soon after, Mesa birthed and trained a second son, Root. Thankfully, Root was almost immediately as skilled as his mother.
Mesa passed away shortly after Root came back from his first scouting mission, and got to live her last days proud of her two sons for their success.
