A Tale of Being Young
Everyone has a purpose in this pack….I hope I find mine…
There was one rule in the Silver City Pack, contribute. In some way shape or form, it was expect for all wolves to participate. No role was considered insignificant even pupsitters were considered vital due to raising the future of the pack. Dark empty eyes stared at the other apprentices. Blue and red pelts raced each other diligently in mock hunts across a the clearing. The joyous chorus of Judas, Qaspiel, Kalkydra, and Shiva rang out as they barked and yipped. Watching from afar, Yael tilted his head curiously. He felt nothing in common with his apprentice mates who all knew instantly they wanted to feel the wind through ruffle their fur, the thrill of the hunt, and the warmth of the prey in their mouths.
Is that what it's like to know your calling? The words clambered around Yael's mind deepening the uneasy feeling settle in his stomach. Is this what its like to be useless…
The blue grey pup woke up each morning watching as they wolves milled about the central den areas. The other adolescent that have already settled on their path slept in the dens with the other hunting adults. Only Yael kept to himself in the den of limbo which felt aptly appropriate to him. Typically this den was use for passing wolves or wolves that joined the pack for a night or two before moving on. Here the adolescent slept alone at night trying to determine what he was going to do. Most of the adolescents became hunters. Two felt the itch in their paws to scour the lands for items or new territories, but Yael spent each day staring at the den trying to feel anything that moved him in any direction.
"Yael!" The sharp bark of Tartys, the Grulla she wolf, jerked the pup from his day dreams. "Maybe instead of watching the others hone their skills maybe you should do the same." Her words were as sharp as her gaze. Tartys, one of the many skilled hunters in this pack, looked as fierce as her bite. With a strong/firm lineage, she held a serve dislike for Yael. With a snarl the she wolf flitted away to help train the future chasers.
"Don't mind her." A soft voice echoed from behind Yael. Whirling around the gray eyes of an orange and white wolf met his. "She doesn't understand those of us who are different." Voice soft like the summer breeze, Haniel tilted his head slightly to the right studying Yael. "It must be lonely staying in the limbo den every night." His soft rumble continued trying to urge any response out of the pup.
"I think I prefer to be alone." Quiet and dull was Yael's response. Silence. Silence was what brought to Yael comfort. Prior to join this pack, he was ostracized after weaning. His previous pack was so large that any pups not destined to stay were pushed out once they hit adolescent age. No interaction. Minimal food. Destined to be an outcast.
"Yael…." Haniel's soft voice jerked the pup again from his daydreams. "Have you ever thought about being an herbalist?" His question was gentle innocent trying to get a response from the pup. Yael pointed his ears at the orange wolf before him.
"Wh….What?" Stammering Yael started to reply.
"It tends to be a solitary job and I am needing to train a replacement. I'm getting older and well I'm looking to retire." Haniel allowed his words to sink into the pup.
"I'm going foraging now, why don't you join me?" With those words Haniel turned on his heels flicking his tail to beckon the pup after him, padding off into the forest. The orange wolf paused momentarily, looking over his shoulder.
The blue grey pup hesitantly placed a paw towards Haniel. Maybe this was the sign he had been looking for an opportunity to fit in. Which each following step, the pup became more confident as he slowly pulled alongside the orange male. With a gentle nudge, Haniel continued off into the forest to start the pup's first lesson as an herbalist.
