Silvershine was a dutiful little girl who cared deeply about what was expected of her. She gravitated more to spending time with the adults instead of with the other pups. And she seemed to lack confidence, even during playtime. While the other pups were running around without a care in the world, Silver would be distracted, as if thinking about something else. She often asked her pupsitter Sandfur what to do. If another pup said a certain thing to her, what should she say back? If she was afraid of the dark, what should she do? Her questions were very smart, so Sandy answered them, but also encouraged Silver to figure things out on her own and trust her instincts. What was right was more important than what was expected. Some of Silver's elders believed that having a working mother who was gone most of the day simply affected Silver more than the other pups. After all, her mother Flowerpetal had been very close with her own mother as well. But Sandy wasn't so sure. Silver's behavior didn't seem to change that much even when her mother was there. Silver's intelligence would serve her well as a stalker, but Sandy worried about her. If she could learn to trust herself and her packmates, she would gain confidence and feel better about everything.
At the Academy, Silver was assigned to study wisdom and smarts to enhance her natural talents for stalking work. She excelled in all her lessons, which boosted her confidence and she came out of her shell with the other pups. The socializing and cooperation lessons especially helped her shake off her nerves and before long, she was spending all her time with the other pups and learning on her own. Her elders missed her following them around, but they knew that it was better for her to have friends her own age. When it came time to choose her last lesson, Silver chose a hunting lesson, much to the surprise of her teachers. They were impressed by her boldness and she was happy to please them.
During her apprenticeship, Silver went out on the trail with her mother Flowerpetal to get a handle on stalking work. It was complicated and Silver was reluctant to try on her own. But with Flower's encouragement, Silver found that it wasn't so hard after all, once she got the hang of it. She still relied on her mother's coaching a lot however, and it wasn't until fairly late in her apprenticeship that she really came into her own. One morning, the hunters and apprentices woke to find that Flower was sick with the flu and unable to hit the trail. Flower and Bloodfeather agreed that Silver could take over stalking duties for a little while. Silver was nervous, but the other apprentices rallied around her and encouraged her. Out on the trail, she was able to find a good strong prey scent that led the hunting party to a bighorn ram. This was a turning point for Silver and she realized that she would be just as good as her mother someday, maybe even better. She still appreciated her mother's guidance, but she knew that she could do it by herself.
On her first birthday, Silver was the first of the youngsters to get drunk on fermented barley. Not the type to shout or sing, she instead spent the entire evening giggling and laughing at everything going on around her, and even at nothing at all. Her elders got worried about her later in the night and her mother took her to bed.
Now as an adult, Silver's confidence rarely wavers, and even when it does, another success on the trail buoys it back up again. Now that she understands much more about the world, what's expected doesn't seem very important anymore. What's important is work and packmates and trying not to act too crazy after a couple of drinks. She still likes to spend time with her elders, but she enjoys her time with her cousins just as much. They love that she'll laugh at anything after a drink or two, but she doesn't let them ply her too much. There's always vital work to be done in the morning and too much fun spoils the next day.
