Demonwing was a dutiful little girl who was proud to be the strongest in the nursery. If something needed to be moved or someone wanted a piggyback ride, she was there volunteering. If other pups were squabbling, she would step in between to break it up. But she sometimes crossed the line between pride and arrogance, pushing aside other pups to get to a toy or snack she especially wanted. A few times, she even tried to discipline other pups when she thought they were misbehaving. Each time she took it too far, she was scolded severely by her pupsitter Sandfur who warned her against becoming a bully. Being strong didn't make her any better or more grown up than the other pups and Demon needed to remember that. Some of her elders said that she lived up to her name because she acted like a demon sometimes. But Sandy was certain that she just hadn't learned how to use her strength appropriately yet. She would be a wonderful finisher one day, if she could learn to be a demon in name only.
At the Academy, Demon was an eager student and enjoyed her strength and agility lessons every day. She became more focused and her behavior improved dramatically as she gained better self-control and respect for others. Her elders were pleased with her improvement and praised her. But she still took things too far on occasion, tussling too roughly or refusing to let go of a toy she ambushed, and earned herself a few scoldings. These incidents made Sandy decide to assign Demon's last lesson instead of letting her choose. A cooperation lesson reinforced the kind of good behavior everyone wanted to see from Demon and discouraged her from being selfish or overbearing. Her progress was encouraging and Sandy had high hopes that Demon would be an angel in no time.
During her apprenticeship, Demon went out on the trail with her mother Creampool to learn finishing work. And at first, Demon thought she knew it all. She had the bite techniques, the wrestling moves, and of course the strength. She thought she would be taking over in no time. But she was unprepared for the realities of the actual job. It all hit her very hard one afternoon when the apprentices helped the hunters chase a bull elk into the shallows at the edge of the creek. He was panicked as the wolves surrounded him and Creampool went in for the kill. But at the last moment, the elk flailed and kicked Cream clear across the creek. Bloodfeather yelled for everyone to stay in position, but Demon broke formation and tried to run to her mother. Seeing an opening, the elk charged straight towards her. It was only Blood's quick action to grab his hind leg that kept Demon from being trampled. In her terror, Demon acted on pure instinct and leapt at the elk's throat, killing him with a lucky bite. They both fell with a great splash into the creek. Everyone was impressed by Demon's first kill, especially Cream when she was able to get up and limp back to the hunting party. But Demon was terrified by the incident and listened to Blood's lecture about following his orders in stunned silence. She went to bed that night wondering if she could ever face that fear again. But the next morning, she felt better about the whole thing, and also very humbled. The lesson of not being better than anyone had finally sunk in. She would be more careful in the future and watch out for her teammates. She could be a leader without being a bully.
On her first birthday, Demon helped Herbalist Lightningleap pass around the fermented barley, making sure everyone else got some before she took any herself. She felt like a new wolf as she celebrated with her cousins and the whole pack. She had some of the admiration that she craved, and now she knew how to earn it, by being a team player and giving respect.
Now as an adult, Demon lives by all the lessons she learned as a pup. Be humble, give respect to get respect, take care of your packmates, be a team player. These values have allowed her to overcome her questionable puppyhood reputation and rise to be the head of her hunting team. If there's a challenge, she's meeting it. If there's danger, she's facing it. Her teammates know they can rely on her to be ready for anything the trail might bring, and to be there when they need backup at home too. She'll still step in between a squabble, but never bullies anyone. She'll drink a toast to a packmate's accomplishment, but she never gets drunk. She likes to keep balance in her life and be the angel that her elders always hoped she could be.
