Biography
Khionê was a mountain nymph of Mount Haimos (Haemus) in Thrake (north of Greece).
She was the mountain-nymph wife and consort of Boreas, god of the chill north-wind. Who dwelt with her husband in a cave on Mount Haimos (Haemus) in Thrake. She was probably a goddess of snow (khiôn) as her name suggests.
She was once known as Oreithyia a once a mortal princess who was abducted by the god from the banks of the river Ilissos near Athens. He carried her off to Thrake where she became his immortal wife. Oreithyia was probably the goddess of chill mountain winds for her name means "mountain-rager"--from the Greek words oreios and thyô--and then she was named the mother of Khione (Snow).
