Verne was the first fox to be born within Wanderlost Wakening. At birth, her mother Moth couldn't believer her eyes. Moth quickly took little Verne to the herbalist, worried something was wrong. Herbert assured her that the pup was perfectly healthy, and explained that, a lot like wolves with mutations, foxes are believed to be a manifestation of magic:

"Magic runs through these lands, Moth. Surely you have seen things you can't explain, as have many others. Wolves, among other creatures, also carry this magic. The thing is, nature always seeks balance, and a perfectly healthy wolf that possesses magical abilities would simply be too strong to keep that balance. So when a wolf is born with magic, their physical abilities compensate for that. Lethal mutations indicate the strongest magic. Less severe mutations like cataracts or deafness indicate magic that is a little less strong. Those with coat or eye colour mutations, like albinism, melanism or heterochromia, possess a very small amount of magic. Foxes, badgers and other special coated wolves carry the smallest amount of magic."

As the moons waxed and waned, Verne grew older. She got assigned the role of Scout, but as there were already two scouts in the pack, she had nothing to do while she was waiting for one of the others to retire.
She started feeling more and more separated from the other wolves in her pack. There were a few others with lunar and cataclysm coats, but they just didn't seem very interested in their magical side. The only wolf Verne could talk to about this was Shimmer, the new herbalist, who is a carrier for albinism. Shimmer encouraged her to go out and search for her magic while she still had the time. At first Verne was hesitant, but seeing that nobody in her pack really cared for magic, despite magical potential being very much present, convinced her to go. And so, she set off on her adventure to find magic and bring it back to her pack.
