Bearswipe was a humble little boy who was very sweet and happy to follow along with the other pups in their games. But he rarely voiced his own opinion or made any demands like other pups his age. In fact, he didn't even complain when his brothers played too rough. His pupsitter Sandfur encouraged him to stand up for himself but it was hard for Bear to put his paw down, being so sweet. Bear had one thing going for him though, he was his mother Pineshadow's favorite. It was always Bear who she held close to her heart at bedtime and always Bear who got the softest shreds of meat at mealtime. The pups didn't even seem to notice, but their elders did. Sandy took Pine aside one night and explained to her that favoritism could damage Bear's relationship with his brothers. Pine promised to stop, but Sandy wondered if she really would.
At the Academy, Bear was assigned to study speed and wisdom to strengthen his weakest stats. He was a good student, energetic but respectful, and willing to do whatever was asked of him. He didn't sleep cuddled with his mother anymore, but she took a keen interest in his education and often met him after class to ask how his lesson went. The fact that she always asked Bear first didn't go unnoticed by the other pups or Bear himself. Bear was maturing and becoming more aware of everything going on around him. His mother's attention was beginning to embarrass him, especially since his brothers and cousins were starting to tease him about it. One day when Pine was being particularly overbearing with her affection, Bear lost his patience and told his mother to please not treat him like her baby puppy anymore. Pine looked sad, but also proud. And Bear was proud too. He finally stood up for himself, like Sandy wanted him to.
During his apprenticeship, Bear stayed at the Academy to help care for the pups who came through after him. And it seemed that his mother's doting had a lasting effect on him because he seemed to dote on every puppy like they were his favorite. He would let them climb all over him and nip at his ears and tail. He still didn't like to put his paw down and sometimes ended up losing a little blood from scratches and bites as a result. Sandy continued to encourage him and eventually he learned how to say no with love. His mother, however, was more difficult to deal with. She was still a little too attentive and saying no with love didn't always work with her. But calling her a "hovering hummingbird" usually did, so that's what Bear did, a lot. Bear's brothers picked up on that and soon all of them were saying it. Alpha Dawnbreeze had to step in and put a stop to it, but she also secretly told Pine to stop being crazy over her boys. It was causing too many problems.
On his first birthday, Bear pretended his mother didn't exist. He didn't speak a word to her or listen to a word she said to him. He'd had enough of her attention. This night was about celebrating, not coddling. He was happy to see that she got the message quickly and left him to his revelry with his brothers and cousins.
Now as an adult, Bear is still the sweetest wolf in the pack. But not so sweet that he can't put his paw down when necessary. Each new class of pups quickly learn to recognize the look on Bear's face when he's reaching his limit of patience. And if a pup crosses the line, no one gives a sharper rebuke than Bear. But no one gives a warmer hug than Bear either, or a happier celebration for a pup's achievement. Bear knows better than anyone where the line is between showing a pup individual attention and overindulgence. Each pup in his care feels like the favorite but none of them feel smothered. Bear prides himself on keeping that balance so that no pup will have to feel the way he did growing up. He still maintains a good relationship with his mother though, as long as she respects his boundaries.
