Matrix always knew she was different, and not just because she was born of an accidental breeding. She never really felt like she fit in anywhere, always feeling like she was missing something. During puppyhood, she got itchy feet and somehow lost her pupsitter and tumbled down a cliff side and suffered a nasty head wound. During her comatose state for a few days, she dreamed of a voice.. and it had a message.
"You can't catch a digital shadow... "
Thus.. once she recovered, the message felt like it was beckoning her.. but to where? Thus.. she decided to set out on a journey.. to discover herself.. and what did that message mean?

Chapter 1:
>> ECHO "which $PATH"
Oracle recognized her when she joined him on the hunt as an apprentice. Something about her, sparked the thought in his mind. "Matrix." Oracle spoke, taking her aside he led her away from the group. "Matrix, you are, my child right?"
She shifted nervously. "Y-yes. I am."
He looked at her carefully. "Did you know who I was when you came to travel with my pack?"
"Yes, I was aware you were my father." She admitted, hanging her head low. "I just, I wanted to know why I felt so wrong, so, different. I'd been told that you too felt different at one point. That you had found an answer to your questions."
Oracle studied her impassively. His heart ached for the young wolf. He knew how it felt, to be out of place, out of body. But the solution he had used was one reserved only for pack members.
Or was it?
Solaris was gone, and now he was the guardian of the Kernel. Matrix was his daughter. Perhaps, just this once. An exception could be made.
Midnight the next night, he nosed her ear until she awoke. "Come with me and make no sounds. We never met up tonight. What I am about to show you doesn't exist. Do you understand me?" He spoke in a low voice, barely above a whisper. Matrix nodded and swallowed quietly. "Good. Lets go."
Before long, Matrix and Oracle stood before a damaged wooden structure. He motioned her to go inside, and, with cautious steps, she walked into the space inside, Oracle right behind her. "What is
that?" She breathed, eyes widening in the dark. The flat face of the object flickered a bit as the two wolves approached.
"This, is the Kernel. It is sacred to Data Pack. Outsiders are forbidden from even knowing of it's existence. This, this is what helped me in my time of need. I hope it will help you. Raise your paw and place it on the Kernel." Oracle stepped back and watched his daughter anxiously.
Matrix stepped forwards, her heart beating a rapid drum tempo in her chest. She raised a paw and placed it on the Kernel's surface. Suddenly the Kernel sprung to life! Lights and strange symbols flashed across it's surface, brighter than ever before. The room was lit up with glowing shapes that danced along the walls, and a soft hum filled the air. Matrix felt a tingling in her paw that traveled down her leg and across her entire body. Every strand of fur stood on end. As the humming reached a peak there was a sudden BANG! And the Kernel fell silent, the front face was split into four bars of color. A black bar on top, then a white one, then gray, and finally, purple, before turning completely black once more.
Oracle let out a breath he hadn't been aware he was holding in as Matrix stepped back from the Kernel. She looked at him quizzically, "What was that about? All those weird shapes and noises? And then those colored stripes at the end?"
Oracle smiled. "It seems the Kernel has seen into your soul too my child. It knows the answers to our hearts that we are afraid even to ask. Come now. Sleep on this and you will understand more in the morning." The next morning, when Matrix awoke, she found a scrap of colored cloth had been tucked beside her head. It was broken into four bars of color, black on top, then white, then gray, and finally, purple, and it smelled faintly of Oracle.

Eventually, Matrix's travels lead her to the desert. A barren land of scorching sands, it was nothing like the woods she knew before. She never intended to stay as long as she did, but she found the desert difficult to navigate. Soon, she began to find herself becoming hopelessly lost. Why were there no marked trees? Why did every plant in this place have thorns? Where was all the -water-?
Eventually, she could wander no more, and collapsed beneath the shade of a lone palo verde. Matrix panted, and tried to lick her aching paws in order to cool them down, but it was hopeless. She had never been so thirsty in her entire life. Matrix closed her eyes, as she rested her head on her paws. Part of her cynically wondered if she would even wake up in the morning.
Instead, however, she was awakened by a shadow falling over her, and the feeling of cool water being pressed against her nose. Matrix lifted her head, bleary-eyed to look up at the stranger standing over her. A strange, star-studded wolf, who's fur blinked and faded with bright yellow lights. She was holding a small bowl of water out to Matrix, which reflected the night sky above them.
Matrix briefly wondered if she was dead.
But as her tongue touched the water, cool relief flooded through her body, and she felt more alive than ever. Matrix lapped at the water, nodding at the stranger gratefully. Matrix noticed the strange wolf glance briefly at her forehead. Matrix winced. Bracing for the inevitable questions, and pity she never asked for. But just as quickly, the stranger's gaze moved elsewhere, lingering on the little flag that lay beside Matrix's feet.
"Are you alright?" The star-studded stranger asked. Matrix nodded, feeling a little embarrassed at having to be rescued. The stranger smiled.
"Hey, don't worry about it. Everyone gets lost sometimes. My job is to help find them. I'm Starfinder, by the way," The stranger winked. "The name is a coincidence, I assure you. Are you alright to walk on your own?"
Matrix nodded, as she pushed herself shakily back to her feet. She still felt a little dizzy, but she was alive, and uninjured. For that, she was grateful. Starfinder smiled.
"Wonderful. Than shall we walk together? I can show you safest way through the desert. In the meantime, I would love to hear your story. It's always nice to meet a fellow traveler."
Matrix opened her mouth in surprise. How could this stranger possible know she was a traveler? Seeing her expression, Starfinder grinned.
"Hey, I know a wanderer when I see one. My mother was a wanderer too." For a moment, Starfinder almost looked a little sad. But it must have been a trick of the light, as soon, Starfinder was trotting briskly across the desert sand beneath the stars, and Matrix nearly had to run to keep up.
Despite the past danger, Matrix found the experience quite exhilarating. She found she liked the desert much better at night. When the intense sun was no longer beating down on her back, Matrix found that she could fully drink it in – the sights, the sounds, and the smells of everything around her. A long the way, Matrix found she quite liked talking to Starfinder – who listened to her stories so intensely, she could make you believe you were the most interesting wolf in the world. (edited)
By the time they reached the end of the desert, Matrix was almost a little sad to see her go. If Starfinder felt the same, she was doing her best to hide it. Instead, she beckoned Matrix a little closer.
"Here, traveler – before you go, I have a little gift for you." Starfinder touched her nose to Matrix's. Matrix jumped, as she felt an electric jolt run through her body. When she looked down, she noticed that her paws were now illuminated in a bright purple glow. She found when she concentrated, she could control the intensity of the glow, and even hide it completely if she liked.
Matrix ran back and forth in place, and glanced over her shoulder – as she left little glowing pawprints behind her, slowly fading. She felt like she could run forever. Matrix then looked at Starfinder, ready to protest. How could she possibly accept a gift like this? She somehow felt undeserving.
But Starfinder simply smiled warmly.
"May the light guide your footsteps, traveler. Even if you don't know exactly where you are going, your heart will be your compass, and your feet will carry you there. Safe travels, wanderer."

Upon arriving at Sigilo, Matrix was, unimpressed. The man who approached her was clearly used to woman fawning over him the instant they saw him. She rolled her eyes when he raised his eyebrows at her. "As I was saying," she cleared her throat in agitaton as his eyes roamed her body. Her tail flicked in agitation. "I'm seeking sanctuary, temporarily."
Perhaps just overnight if this is how the Alpha treated his guests.
"My apologies, my lady, right this way."
Oh, NOW hes polite. He was giving her whiplash. She rolled her eyes and began to follow the strange colorful man. She was grateful when she showed him to a private cave away from the rest of the pack. She wasted no time in making the cave into a formidable den before falling quickly into sleep. Her stay was long and boring. All she really did was lounge about. She was never really assigned a true role. Although she did enjoy keeping an eye on the little ones from time to time, or roaming around the prarie near the pack's territory. Nonetheless, she was grateful to move on, she had been still for far too long. As the young alpha bid her farewell, a swarm of butterflies approached Matrix. She stood in silence and allowed them to envelope her form. "They seem to have taken a liking to you." Macadamien Nut observed." "They're free to travel with me as long as they please." Matrix's smile was one of self satisfaction. She knew not where she was going, only that she and her new friends would get along just fine.

When she got word that Oracle, her sire, was getting old, Matrix hurried to Data Pack to be by his side in his final days. Arriving in Data Pack's territory, she was escorted to Oracle's side. He was resting on the cool floor of a cave, but raised his head at her approach, his tail thumping against the ground.
"And to what do I owe the honor of your presence my dear daughter?" He asked, a wry smile playing about his face.
She looked at him, his once vibrant fur was dull, and gray and white streaks ran through his fur. "Oh hush." She whispered, nuzzling against his neck. "Can't a daughter visit her father without questions?"
He threw back his head and laughed, eyes closed with mirth. "Very well my dear. Come and sit with this old wolf for a while." He felt her settle beside him and then turned his attention out to the pups playing and wrestling nearby. "Life goes on my love. With or without us. It is a blessing the time we have on this world, wouldn't you agree?"
She watched in silence for a while before replying. "Yes, I agree."
Time sweeps on, like a relentless tide it cares not for those caught in its path, and before long Matrix awoke to find Oracle's body cold and still beside her. She nudged him with her nose but he was gone. Anguish burned in her chest, and she turned and fled the cave into the warm spring air. She ran without thinking, crushing the flowers underpaw that seemed to grow in mockery of her father's demise.
Finally, she stopped and looked around. Her flight had carried her deep into the mountains, and she stood before the structure that Oracle had guided her to so very long ago. Almost on instinct, she entered the building and stood before the Kernel.
"I'm here now, Kernel. What am I supposed to do?" She whispered to the dark box before her. "Oracle is gone! Do you hear me? Gone!" Silence was all that greeted her rising voice. "I'm all alone now! What am I supposed to do? I, I don't know how to proceed." Her voice dropped to a choked whisper again as her head hung. "I'm all alone."
Light flickered across her face, and she looked up at the Kernel. The dark box was alight with colors, flickering rapidly as symbols marched across the surface. She took a tentative step closer, until her nose was a hairsbreadth away from the object. "Oracle?" She said, hardly daring to breathe. The device hummed, colors and symbols increasing in intensity and frequency as an electric charge filled the room. Matrix felt her fur stand on end, like being in a thunderstorm.
YOU
ARE
NOT
ALONE
. . . . . . . . . .
YOU
ARE
NEVER
ALONE
"Oracle?!" Matrix pressed her paw against the Kernel, the whine in the air turned harsh, the electric tang in the air became more palpable. The Kernel flashed colors and displayed a message.
I LOVE YOU MATRIX
MY DAUGHTER
"Oracle!" She shouted, the Kernel gave a sudden BANG! and flashed a brilliant blue before going dark once more. She blinked, spots floating in front of her eyes. Before her, the dark face of the Kernel reflected her face, and she saw her eyes glow blue, just like Oracle's.
