It was the evening in a large burrow under a cedar tree. The burrow had various herbs and medicines that lay on shelves carved into the burrow walls and tree roots. Two wolves stood before each other. One was brown with a black ticked back and reeked of medicine. She had a low, yellow-ish underbelly and olive green eyes. Her fur was shaggy and messy- her face had lots of silver-white hairs. She was clearly an old wolf. The other was smaller and much younger. She was a golden brown with a slightly darker back and light undersides. A faint blue stripe ran along the side of her body and glazed her muzzle. She had both ears notched/torn, a small scar on her right eye, and a missing left eye. Her foot had a minor but noticeable scratch as well. Unlike the timber wolf, the golden brown female stood tall and with authority.
Cave Crawler: "Cherry Root, you have to let me heal them! All three pups including the mother are going to die at this rate!" The timber herbalist pleaded.
Cherry Root: "I know what I'm doing. Let me handle things on my own." The ducat alpha dismissed her request.
Cave Crawler: "AND JUST WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING?! LETTING YOUR OWN PACK MEMBERS DIE?!" She snarled at the alpha.
Cherry Root: "CECE, STAND DOWN!" Cherry snarled back at her before quickly calming down. "I'm going to keep the russet alive. I have an idea."
Cave Crawler: "She's BARELY a month old! She's going to die in a few days if you don't let me cure her- cure them!" She whimpered.
Cherry Root left the burrow, but not before taking some strange liquid medicine with her. It wasn't a cure to the pup's illness, but it was something to keep her alive.

Patient has begun releasing discharge from the nose and pawpads grew hard and cracked. The patient is visibly more skinny than other pups her age. Mild fever grew worse but is nothing dangerous yet. Coughing fits have started to occur, and they are frequent.

Patient Russel was found one morning writhing in pain with a high fever while gasping for air. She was at death's door from Distemper. The patient was quickly given a healing salve which restored some of her health and energy in a matter of hours.

Patient is no longer severely dehydrated but still suffers from diarrhea. Pawpads are dry and swollen; patient Russel rarely moves around because of how painful it is to put pressure on her paws. The fever has gone down a little but still remains.

Patient Russel often cries for hours to be cured from her illness. The patient is depressed to the point where she refuses to eat- must be force fed food. Patient Russel almost can't breathe through her nose anymore so she is forced to pant which dehydrates her further. Eye discharge went from a sickly yellow to a dirty brown colour. Patient Russel claims it hurts to blink and her vision is blurred badly. Head tilt and excessive drooling have started to occur in the patient.

Patient has slurred speech, sluggish reactions, and random muscle spasms alongside the occasional seizure. The fever seems to be frying her brain a little. Other than that, nothing has changed about her symptoms.

A day after patient Russel turned six months old, she collapsed and started having a seizure while foaming at the mouth. The patient was forced to drink a healing salve, but the healing effects took a few hours longer than last time to happen. Patient Russel now struggles to walk in a straight line and her head tilt is now more exaggerated.

Just a few days prior to this incident, the patient kept snarling at anyone that tried to feed her. She refused to eat anything 5 days before the incident. Her fever was high and she was burning up. Today, the patient's condition was the worst it's ever been. There was lots of blood in the cave she was in, especially in the cave's water. The patient's vomit was pure blood at this point. Patient Russel was found laying on the ground, barely breathing. She was quickly force fed a healing salve but she remained in a half-dead state for almost an entire day after being given the healing salve. It has become apparent that they may no longer work for her in the future.

It's a success! Patient Russel survived almost an entire year of her life with distemper. Her condition hasn't worsened, but the symptoms have gotten slightly better. Because healing salves have stopped working as effectively, Patient Russel is now receiving weekly treatment for her symptoms with different herbs and tiny portions of distemper cure. Patient Russel has been made the pack's herbalist mainly to heal herself from now on, but information on how to craft a cure for her condition is to be withheld from her at all costs.

Patient Russel has pretty matted, dirty fur. She is forbidden to clean herself in bodies of water to avoid contaminating it. She still cleans her fur every once in a while when it rains, and she uses the rain water to help clear her eyes. It is less painful for her to blink, but she still dislikes moving much due to her low energy and cracked pawpads. Russel takes almost an entire day to gather herbs for the pack, but at least she brings back a good bundle of herbs.

It is unclear entirely what happened to Russel. Her caretakers reported that she stopped taking her herbal treatment just three days prior to her death, and her health rapidly began to decline over those three days. By the first day after skipping her treatment, Russel was missing for hours. She had left to forage for herbs. Her caretakers thought she was just stocking up on the herbs she used to heal herself, but they were wrong. By the second day, Russel was showing disinterest in eating or drinking anything offered to her. She refused to move either, which greatly concerned the pack. On the third and last day, Russel was having multiple seizures. The pack couldn't do anything for her. Her breathing had stopped entirely during one nasty seizure, resulting in her death by suffocation. It was over for the experiment- for her. Russel's body was quickly disposed of in an abandoned mine far away from the pack. The wolves who had contact with her before and after her death were isolated and monitored closely for symptons.
Though parts of her record were erased from the pack's dynasty, that doesnt mean the memories will ever go away. This experiment helped the pack better understand the damaging effects an illness can have on a wolf. Not just physically, but mentally as well. It is a permanent stain on the Galactic One's history; a bug that cannot be cured simply by forgetting.
