Arctis: Return of the Ancients
Sand Star was a special pup born in the Galactic Ones pack. That was because he came from a wolf the Galactic Ones haven't seen in years. Sand Star and his siblings were treated like royalty in the pack, especially Sand himself. That's because he was doomed to be in an arranged marriage a month after he was brought to the pack.
On one summer night, when Sand Star was 8 months old, the temperature suddenly dropped. Many smaller animals had to huddle together in burrows because their fur wasn't thick enough to keep them warm for the sudden drop. During the cold summer night in the grasslands, Sand Star began to change colour. His muted cream base with dark blue accents changed to an icy blue one overnight, and no one in the pack knew how or why. Many saw it as a sign- a blessing from the stars. Sand Star was the first lunar pelted wolf the pack had in years, and his name was changed to 'Arctis' to match with his cool colours and the season he was born in. Now, Arctis is a very spoiled wolf in the pack but he doesn't necessarily like the attention he's getting.
Arctis: A New Arrangement
When Sand Star was 6 months, he was arranged to pair with an older shewolf, much to his dismay. The two never really got along with each other, especially since Sand Star was almost 2 years younger. After his transformation on a summer night, the name changed Arctis, was paired with a new shewolf. That shewolf was a puppy barely able to walk on her own. He protested to the alpha and the elders that he'd rather be pairbonded to a wolf that was actually in his age group, or not have one at all. The alpha disregarded his claims and Arctis was forced to bond with his future mate, and he begrudgingly began hanging out with his future bride, Radiant Day.
When Arctis was 8 months and Radiant was 2, the two left their Cedar tree burrow to go and bond like the pupsitters told them to. The two youngsters sat down in the grass. The sky was clear and the sun was shining bright. It was still summer, but a cool breeze kept them from boiling under the heat in the vast meadows. "Gee mister, you sure know how to hunt!" Radiant woofed happily at Arctis. He had a hare by his paws. It easily was the same size as Radiant. Her red eyes shimmered as she looked at the hare in awe. "It wou' take months 'til I can hunt this big!" She exclaimed before munching away at the critter's legs. Arctis was flattered by her comments. "I'm sure with a bit of training, you'll be as great of a hunter as me." He had a proud smile on his face.
After the two finished their meal together, they took a stroll through the meadows. Arctis and Radiant Day stopped to sniff the flowers, and Arctis gave her a sapphire to go with her gemstone pelt. Radiant happily accepted the gift, and the two spent the rest of their afternoon chasing grouse together until it was time for Radiant to return home for her nap.
Growing Older
When Arctis was nearing a year old, he planned a hunting unit with all his friends who were around his age, though two were older. Once the alpha approved of their hunting unit, the group immediately began their practice to hone their skills. Chasing bison and passing elk herds was a common thing the group did as most of the group were speedy wolves. Radiant got to tag along as well, usually watching from a distance as she didn't want to get her paws dirty.
One summer night when Arctis was 6 months and Arctis 11, the pair were prancing through the meadows, causing fireflies to fly up in the sky to avoid getting stomped on. It was a beautiful sight that the pair both enjoyed together, and that night ultimately made Arctis fall for Radiant. They spend the rest of the night sleeping under the stars together, and didn't return to the pack until morning where they were greeted with teasing remarks by their friends and a rather upset mother of Radiant.
Change is Constant
On a cool spring evening, Arctis arrived from a hunt for bad news from his packmates. Opāru had passed away a week prior to his return. He was a mentor of Arctis and his friends. Opāru was his father-in-law too. Arctis and his friends were quick to console Tengoku and Radiant. Opāru was a fine hunter they haven't seen in a long time, and was a dear friend to all in the pack. During the whole time, Arctis and his hunting party were out in the tundra. Many miles away from the pack. It would take a full week for him to turn, and that is when he noticed Radiant had changed.
It was summer. The sun warmed the lands, bathing the vast meadows in its heat. Arctis approached the pale blue and white shewolf with delicate roses in his mouth. Their bold red colour went well with shewolf's eyes. Radiant Day turned her head away, displeased with what her lover had brought her. "Come on, I thought you liked roses?" Arctis had pleading eyes, but she didn't give him a second look. "Get them out of my face and find me a real gift!" She huffed in annoyance. The male still left the flowers for her, but quickly ran off elsewhere. Arctis took a detour around the tree cluster, digging through the alpha's hoard for any items that might interest her. The hoard was mostly full of animal body parts, but he did find a few shiny things.
After almost an hour, he returned with a sapphire gem in his jaws. "Arctis." She glared at him. Arctis shrunk in place, Radiant's fierce gaze making him take a few steps back. "I- but I thought you liked sapphires. That was the gift I gave you when you were younger." He whimpered, his lapis blue eyes shimmering in the sunlight. "Well I'm older now. A child's gift doesn't fit a lady like myself." She puffed out her chest, refusing to look at him. "Find me something better!" She barked, and Arctis scampered off into the open meadow.
Arctis had brought various flowers, gems, and other trinkets for her. Most of which he took from the alpha's hoard. He went so far as to harvest the body parts of animals in hopes to appease her. He even managed to get his teeth on a wolf skull, which horrified Radiant. "No! No! NO!" She snarled, rejecting every single one of his gifts. "DO. BETTER!" Radiant howled in anger, having lost her patience. It had been three days since her mood swing, and Arctis was getting exhausted.
Arctis ran off to the dreamlands, hoping something out of this world would please her. He ran all the way to the lunar glacier. He had to avoid lunar orcas, crab dolphins, and giant ice robots. Giant walruses and seals were also a pain. It was very hectic there. Arctis almost got eaten by an orca too, but an ice robot got in the way and began attacking the orca. As he watched the fierce fight unfold, he noticed a round orb drop from the ice machine. It was a frozen pearl. It was a faint blue/purple and was covered in ice. Arctis grabbed it and ran to a safe place where he could wake up. He returned back home battered and bruised. He tripped over an exposed root from the tree. He dropped the pearl he was holding, letting out a yelp as he tumbled a few feet forward before dropping flat on his stomach.
The pearl was still covered in ice despite the heat of the day. Radiant carefully picked it up, inspecting the pearl. A pleased smile came upon her face as she walked up to her lover. "What a lovely gift. I've never seen anything like it before!" She smiled, her tail swaying slightly. Radiant Day gave Arctis a small lick on the nose before laying beside him. He let out a sigh of relief, having finally pleased his wife. The two spent the rest of the day together with Radiant having to lick his wounds.
The Cheater: Unfaithful Wife
It had been two weeks since Radiant Day gave birth to her litter of five. Her mother was there by her side as they waited for Arctis to come home from his hunt. Sometimes Arctis wished that the alpha didn't send him and his friends all the way to the arctic tundra to hunt. Even after the old alpha, Berry Bark, had passed, Arctis and his friends continued to hunt far away for the best seals to catch. Their hunting trip took longer than normal, however. What would usually be a 10 day trip took 16 days.
A blizzard rolled in not too long after they caught a seal pup. It had strong winds and reduced visibility for three days. The group hid out in an ice cave and they had to dig themselves out because of how deep the snow was. After making down to the taiga and into the coniferous forest, a heatwave slowed down their movement. It was another two days of mostly hiding in the shade before they pressed forward. Arctis and his team finally made it back to the grasslands, exhausted and starving. Arctis had hunted down and killed a few rabbits for his team with the help of Autumn, his monochromatic buddy. He didn't eat any, however. Instead, he wanted to bring back food for his mate.
It was early fall in the afternoon when they returned. It was still warm and sunny like summer, but winter was going to arrive soon. Many members of the pack were worried about them as they took a long time to get back home. After explaining their story, the pack was relieved that they made it back safe. Arctis, however, was quick to pad over to him and Radiant's burrow. He approached the resting shewolf who woke up as soon as she heard something entering her burrow.
"Arctis! What took you so long?!" The pale blue shewolf barked and whined in excitement and sadness. "There was a blizzard in the tundra and we had to wait it out for a few days. Then, the heatwaves in the forests slowed us down." His voice was muffled as he still had the rabbit in his jaws. Arctis walked towards her, his tail wagging. He stopped just 4 feet away, sitting in front of his mate. He dropped the rabbit, nudging it towards her. "Did you give birth yet?" His head tilted, and Radiant gave him a slow nod in response. He noticed her ears had flattened as she slowly moved her tail out of the way. Nestled by her stomach were 5 pups. Three had blue pelts like the two of them and one was a lavender. The smallest pup, however, was a pale green. Arctis stared in silence at the pups. The silence was loud; it drowned the burrow with tension.
She... Why does that pup have a green pelt? I know she has lavender pelted siblings from the same parents, but a green pup from two blue coloured wolves?! His claws sunk into the dirt. No... Radiant couldn't have done that... But that "Shards" wolf is always hanging out with her. He's the only male in this pack with green fur... Before he realized it, a minute of silence had passed. Arctis quietly got up and left the burrow.
"Arctis, wait!" Radiant called out. He paused at the den entrance, his back still turned to his mate. "L-look, my parents have given birth to green pelted pups before! Just ask my mother! It runs in the family!" She spoke in desparation, her voice shakey. "I-I swear this isn't what you think-" "Don't lie to me." Arctis interrupted. He spoke with such loathing; his anger building up by the minute. "You cheated on me. Didn't you?" He turned his head to the side. Arctis stared at her with his piercing lapis eyes. "You cheated on me with him." That damn scout who I thought was my friend.. He snarled before leaving the burrow. "Arctis, please! I swear these are your pups! Please come back!" She cried out, but her pleas fell upon deaf ears. Arctis walked away from the cluster of trees the pack made home at. Confused and concerned pack members turned to Arctis who didn't dare look back. Instead, he ran. He ran away from his home. From his mate. From his pups. Tears rolled down his face as he ran as far away as he could from the cedar tree cluster, feeling so badly betrayed and hurt.
A Broken Heart Mends
It had been two weeks of wandering the grasslands on his own. He survived off of whatever rabbits and stoats he could find. Winter was in less than two months, so prey was getting scarce. Obviously he wasn't able to take on deer or elk like he did with his hunting party. Herds often drive off lone wolves as they aren't much of a threat on their own.
It was a cold afternoon in the fall. Arctis returned to a burrow in a lonely tree he sniffed out. He was tired and weak; he hadn't eaten anything in days. From outside his burrow, he heard pawsteps approaching. A large cottontail hare was dropped into the burrow. The icy blue male hungrily tore into the carcass, eating almost everything. He'd lick his bloody chops, cautiously popping his head out of the burrow to see what gave him the rabbit. A tall white shewolf stood a few feet away. Her icy blue eyes looked at him in curiosity. Arctis slowly crawled out of the burrow, lowering his head to show he was friendly.
"Hello there, stranger." She had a soft, gentle voice that immediately caught his attention. "Hey.." He said, spacing out. He couldn't help but admire her elegance and beauty. "Are you a dispersal out on your own?" She tilted her head at him. "Usually they travel with a sibling or two, but it smells like you're the only one here." The shewolf added. "Dispersal..." Arctis repeated with a mumble. "Yes, I'm alone." He finally spoke up, standing a bit taller. "And thank you for the hare. I really needed it." He bowed his head, grateful for the food. "Oh I know you did." She chuckled. "I've been following you around the past two days, but I'm a dispersal too." She smiled warmly at him. Arctis wasn't at all bothered that she had been following him. Instead, he smiled back with a slight wag of his tail.
Around a month after Arctis met Theta, the white shewolf, he confessed his feelings for her. She was such a kind wolf and she helped him hunt when prey started becoming scarce. Theta admitted to liking him back. And so, the two decided to form their own pack together.
Another month had passed as late fall was approaching. The two would often stroll the grasslands together in their spare time. Sometimes they got too close to the Galactic Ones' territory. It was Arctis' old pack, and he didn't want to go back anytime soon. The pair decided to set their territory at the lonely oak tree. It was large enough shelter for a few wolves to fit in and rest under the shade, but it wasn't the best place seeing as hawks and eagles could swoop down on unprotected pups. It was just a temporary territory, after all.
One evening when he was out on a stroll with Theta, he caught a glimpse of a familiar face. A small shewolf with a pale blue pelt was walking quite a distance away from them with a rabbit in her jaws. She wore the same feather body wear made out of sapphire. No doubt, it was Radiant. Theta didn't seem to notice her as she wasn't facing the wolf's direction. Arctis, however, had noticed her. He led his new mate away from the area, not daring to give his previous lover a second glance. Together, the two walked back home to their burrow, resting for the night. I hope she didn't see us. Is what he told himself. But he already knew she did.
Another two weeks had passed. It was now the final week of October. Arctis and Theta had just finished hunting some hares, and he decided to bring her somewhere. Approaching the borders of another pack's territory, Arctis led her to the top of a hill as the two looked forward. A cluster of cedar trees was not too far away.
"That was my old pack." Arctis sat down, looking at the trees with a sad smile. "I met some incredible wolves there, but certain things happened that forced me to leave." He sighed, his smile fading. Theta gave him a lick on the cheek, which cheered him up a little. "What was your old pack's name?" "The Galactic Ones. It's a silly name, but I heard the pack's original name was much worse." He chuckled. The white shewolf smiled, glad his mood was getting better. "I'm sure it was." She chuckled with him. "Oh and don't get me started on some of the names of the wolves. What kind of name is "Setting Suns"?" The two chuckled as Arctis shared stories about himself in his older pack. There was one story he didin't tell her, however. A huge one that would come to bite (or bark) him in the face.
The sun had already started to set, and Arctis only just realized the time. "We should probably get back home." The icy blue male stood up, ready to turn around and leave. Suddenly, he heard paws rappidly approaching them. He swiftly turned around, preparing for an attack. That was when he saw... Radiant Day.
"YOU!" Her voice was filled with loathing; her eyes were burning with rage. "I can't believe it.. Look who showed up after ALL this time!" The small blue shewolf snarled. Theta had her ears pinned, her head lowered as she stood behind Arctis. He was standing devensively in front of her, giving Radiant nothing but a harsh glare. "So you aren't going to say anything? NOTHING AT ALL?!" She was just inches away from his face. "WHO IS THIS?! SPEAK UP!!" Radiant demanded. Arctis let out a slight growl. "My mate." He said coldly, and that made Radiant to tear up. "So you wanted revenge, huh?" She said with a shakey voice. "I see how it is. Enjoy your life with that.. Creature." Radiant practically hissed as she narrowed her eyes at the confused Theta. Radiant promptly turned around and ran back to the cedar tree cluster.
The pair watched her leave, and that encounter left Theta full of questions. "Who was she?" Theta turned to Arctis who had a face as cold as ice. "Somebody I used to know." He replied bluntly, picking up the hare he had hunted earlier and walking away. Theta quickly grabbed her hare and walked alongside him, still confused. She decided not to question further, however.
