Shards: Scout of the Galactic Ones
Shards was a pup born to another pack; the result of an agreement between Berry Bark and his mother. Once Shards was a weaned pup, he was given to Berry Bark and brought to his current pack, the Galactic Ones. There, he was happily welcomed by the pupsitters and was unfortunately doomed to be put in an arranged pairbond.
When Shards became an adolescent, his pelt changed colour during the fall. He was now a strange, dark green colour. His eyes turned a glowing green, now electrically charged. His once copper brown pelt, now a dark green/teal with a silver back. This transformation awestruck the pack, and he received lots of attention ever since.
During his adolescent years, Shards was quite observant and attentive. Originally, he was going to be a stalker in a hunting party but the alpha, Berry Bark, decided to have him train as a scout. His mentor was Setting Suns. He was one of the best scouts the pack has ever seen. His fur was like a sunset. Vibrant pink with gentle blue and violet hues. Tints of yellow patterned his underfur as well, and his shining indigo eyes were quick to catch anyone's attention. Despite the attention he got from some of the females, he was pretty stoic. However, Setting Suns did teach a thing or two to Shards on how to woo the ladies. That is how Shards developed his playboy attitude in his adult years.
Growing up, Shards became close friends with Arctis. He was another adolescent that underwent a transformation like him. He used to be a sandy brown male, but his fur changed to an icy blue during a cold summer night in the grasslands they call home. At least his lapis blue eyes finally fit with his appearance. They bonded mainly because of how close they were in age, but also because the two were put in arranged pairbonds. Shards had the misfortune of being paired up with a female two years older than him who was originally going to be with Arctis before he turned into an icy blue male.
Epsilon was another adolescent the two hung out with. She arrived in the pack when she was ten months old; three months older than Arctis, and barely a month older than Shards. She was a dark grey, almost black wolf with gentle, lighter grey undersides and striking azure eyes. Epsilon was the more hyper of the trio, and was a speed demon like Arctis. Much like Shards and Arctis, she was put into an arranged pair only a few months after she arrived in the pack.
The last wolf Shards bonded with during his adolescent years was his arranged pairbond, Singed Stones. Singed was the daughter of a renowned scout in the pack named Nova. She was close friends with Setting Suns, and Shards got to scout with her occasionally. Though Singed was a bit harsh to him at first, eventually the two got along after hanging out a few times.
Growing Up
When Shards, Arctis and Epsilon were finally a year old, Arctis decided to form a hunting party with them, Singed and Autumn Harvest, Epsilon's mate. Whenever Shards wasn't busy scouting out the pack territory and the surrounding territories, he would help his friends on hunting. Though, things quickly became awkward for them as a few weeks after their party was formed, Epsilon began flirting with Shards on their hunts in the tundra. It was harmless fun at first, but eventually Epsilon gathered the group together to ask a serious question. She had asked the party if they'd all like to be in a polyamorous relationship together.
Arctis politely declined as he preferred a monogamous relationship with his pairbond, Radiant Day. However, they both remained close friends with the group. Intrigued by the idea, Shards and Singed agreed. Autumn took some more convincing before he eventually agreed. That is how Shards grew closer to his new mates, Epsilon and Autumn.
Change is Constant
At around three years old, Shards was placed back into full scouting duties much to his dismay. Meanwhile, his friends were out in the far north. Radiant Day, the pale blue shewolf, often hung out with him after he returned from scouting. The alpha didn't always let Radiant hunt with the rest of their friends, since it was already a competent team of four. Whenever they were together, they would visit the dreamlands or lay in the open meadows to star gaze. Sometimes, Shards took her with him on scouting missions where they would head down to the beach.
Shards and Radiant couldn't help but flirt with each other. All their time spent together made Shards realize he was falling for Radiant. Singed adored her too, but she warned Shards against trying anything with her as that would cause problems between the hunting party. Especially since Arctis didn't want him and Radiant to be in their polyamorous relationship, then that would be going against his wishes. However, something happened during a cool spring night.
Walking along the beach was Shards and Radiant. They had been watching a sunset, and it was starting to get dark. Shards knew she was falling for him, and he felt the same way. He let his heart get the better of his judgement as the two hid out in a cove for the night. That night would not only change his life, but Radiant's life too.
The Cheater: A Bad Friend
Shards was out hunting with his friends again. Usually it took 10 days to return whenever they went out to the tundra for seals. However, this trip took 16 days. A blizzard rolled in not too long after they caught a seal pup. It had strong winds and reduced visibility for three days. The group hid out in an ice cave and they had to dig themselves out because of how deep the snow was. After making down to the taiga and into the coniferous forest, a heatwave slowed down their movement. It was another two days of mostly hiding in the shade before they pressed forward. Shards and his team finally made it back to the grasslands, exhausted and starving. His buddy, Arctis, had hunted down and killed a few rabbits for his team with the help of Autumn, his monochromatic mate. Arctis didn't eat any rabbits, however. He was saving one for his mate which Shards thought was sweet. She was due to give birth sometime during their sixteen day hunt.
Upon arriving back in the pack territory with the rotting remains of the seal, everyone was quick to rush over to them, full of questions. The team explained how they had been set back thanks to a blizzard and a heatwave, but Arctis didn't stay behind to chat with the concerned pack members. Shards saw him pad straight over to him and Radiant's burrow. After the barrage of questions, Shards and Autumn brought the carcass to the alpha who was displeased, but understanding. Alpha Cherry Root decided to let them rest instead of having them go out and hunt for something else. Just when Shards and Singed Stones passed by their friends' burrow, they overheard a conversation that caught their attention.
"Arctis, wait!" The pale blue shewolf called out. The icy blue male paused at the den entrance, his back turned to his mate. "L-look, my parents have given birth to green pelted pups before! Just ask my mother! It runs in the family!" She spoke in desperation, her voice shaky. "I-I swear this isn't what you think-" "Don't lie to me." He spoke with such loathing. "You cheated on me. Didn't you?" He turned his head to the side. Arctis stared at her with piercing lapis eyes. "You cheated on me with him." He snarled before leaving the burrow. "Arctis, please!" Tears rolled down her face. "I swear these are your pups! Please come back!" She cried out, but her pleas fell upon deaf ears.
Green pelted pup...? Shards gulped hard. He was about to go and check on Radiant when Arctis suddenly pushed past him. He caught a glimpse of his eyes- sparkling like the gemstone they closely resemble. Was he about to cry? His ears pinned, watching his friend run away from the cedar tree cluster they were in. He ran into the open meadows, disappearing in the horizon like the sun when it sets. He turned to his mate with an unsure look, but that look quickly turned to fear. She radiated with anger as she gazed harshly at Shards. "Looks like we need to have a talk." She spoke with a slight growl. "Y-yes ma'am-" He whimpered, knowing he was going to be yelled at for what he had done.
A Fragile Heart is Cracked
It had been three weeks since Radiant gave birth to her litter of five. Shards avoided her at all costs. He even climbed trees just to avoid her. Running on foot wouldn't help since she was much faster than him. He never dared look at her pups. He didn't want to. If one of the pups truly did have a green pelt, then that was enough proof to know it was his. This was a mistake he could never fix, and the only way he could think of dealing with it was pushing it aside. Arctis had been missing the entire time. Occasionally his scent would pop back up somewhere nearby, but he never returned to the pack. Shards felt very guilty the whole time. The most he got was a scolding by his mate, while Radiant was ridiculed for being a cheater. All of this was starting to break his heart. On an autumn afternoon, Shards finally decided to confront Radiant.
"You IMP! This is all your fault!" The pale blue shewolf snarled at Shards. His glowing green eyes were charged, seemingly with fury. He was secretly feeling immense guilt and sorrow behind those eyes. "Why didn't you say no that night?!" Shards replied, his voice ringing through the cluster of trees they were in. "It's because you tricked me! You tricked me like the snake you are!" The pale blue female yipped. There was an audience forming. Shards knew she was lying, but the point of this confrontation was to talk things over instead of making a scene. Radiant, However, was trying to paint Shards as the bad guy in this situation. At that moment, he felt more anger than guilt towards Radiant.
Shards scoffed at her comment, his lime greed eyes harshly gazing into her crimson red eyes. "I would NEVER do such a thing! Especially not to my own friend!" He shook his head in disappointment. "WE AREN'T FRIENDS, SHARDS!" She spoke with growing rage in her voice. "I WISH WE NEVER MET! YOU RUINED MY LIFE!" She was on the verge of tears. Shards looked at her with a hurt expression. It was true that he didn't make the best choice, but she agreed to it that spring night. "YOU DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO CHECK ON ME- NOT ONCE AFTER THE PUPS WERE BORN! THAT GREEN ONE IS YOURS, Y'KNOW?!" Tears rolled down her cheeks. Shards took a few steps forward, wanting to comfort her despite the things she said to him. Radiant let out a vicious snarl which made him freeze. "GET OUT OF MY SIGHT, FILTHY SNAKE!" Shards pinned his ears against his head, backing off at that. He swiftly turned around, walking away.
He crawled into a burrow where Singed Stones was, sinking his face into her fur. He was feeling so much anger and guilt and betrayal that all he could think of in that moment was crying. Singed rested her head on his shoulder, comforting him the whole time. Feeling worn down, Shards spent the rest of the day inside of his burrow with his mate. He didn't want to see Radiant again. At least not for the next while.
