Radiant Day: The Cheerful One
(Art by #87683)
Radiant Day is a pale blue puppy born to Tengoku and Opāru, two very skilled hunters in the Galactic Ones pack. She is a precious puppy in the pack because of her potential as an incredible hunter like her parents, as well as her rare fur colour she obtained from her parents. She's quite a joyful, happy-go-lucky puppy that likes to goof off with her littermates. An overall goofball.
A few days after Radiant turned 2 months, she was put into an arranged pairbond. Blissfully unaware of this arrangement, she continued to live her life playing with her littermates and other young pups like her.
One summer day when she was 2 months old, Radiant Day was hanging out with her future pairbond, Arctis, who was 6 months older than her. Though confused at first as to why she had to hang out with an adolescent, Radiant grew to admire Arctis because of his hunting skills. During their bonding time, Radiant got to chase grouses with Arctis, and he taught her how to hunt while they did so. Though she didn't catch a grouse, she did get a mouthful of feathers. Near the end of their bonding time, Arctis gave her a sapphire crystal he found while they were walking through the arnica meadows. Radiant Day happily accepted the gift, and she's had it crafted into special jewelry that she now wears a lot.
Growing Older
When Radiant was nearly 7 months and Arctis almost a year old, the pair started hanging out together much more frequently. They even snuck off at night to go watch the stars under the vast meadows they call home. This is when Radiant began growing more independent from her parents and started taking proper hunting lessons with her friends and Arctis. On some nights, her and her friends would hang out as one big group to chase the local pronghorns or play a one-sided game of chase with bison.
One summer night when the dreamlands was accessible to all regular animals, Radiant Day ran off with Arctis to the lunar desert in their sleep. They enjoyed sight seeing the strange world while running from some aggressive creatures. They had fun rolling down sandy dunes and chasing lunar butterflies. Before the night ended, the pair fled to the lunar glacial coast. There, Radiant and Arctis sat by a cliffside where they began chatting about life. Radiant even flirted a bit with Arctis, and their time spent by the coast ultimately made Radiant fall for Arctis. Upon waking up, Radiant began boasting all the things she did in the dreamlands with Arctis to their friends, but they simply teased the pair for their otherworldly shenanigans.
Change is Constant
On a cool spring morning, Radiant woke up to bad news from her mother. Her father, Opāru, had passed away. Radiant had only recently hit her first birthday. She was still so young and yet her father had passed so soon. Radiant and Tengoku mourned his death with the rest of their pack. He was a fine hunter they haven't seen in a long time, and was a dear friend to all in the pack. During the whole time, Arctis and his hunting party were out in the tundra. Many miles away from the pack. It would take a full week for him to return, and that is when Radiant had changed.
It was summer. The sun warmed the lands, bathing the vast meadows in its heat. The fading blue wolf approached Radiant with delicate roses in his mouth. Their bold red colour went well with the pale blue shewolf's eyes. Radiant Day turned her head away, displeased with what her lover had brought her. "Come on, I thought you liked roses?" He had pleading eyes, but Radiant didn't give him a second look. "Get them out of my face and find me a real gift!" She huffed in annoyance. The male still left the flowers for her, but quickly ran off elsewhere. The impatient shewolf sat against the cedar tree, waiting outside of her burrow for her mate to return.
After another hour, the male returned with a sapphire gem in his jaws. "Arctis." She glared at him. Arctis shrunk in place, Radiant's fierce gaze making him take a few steps back. "I- but I thought you liked sapphires. That was the gift I gave you when you were younger." He whimpered, his lapis blue eyes shimmering in the sunlight. "Well I'm older now. A child's gift doesn't fit a lady like myself." She puffed out her chest, refusing to look at him. "Find me something better!" She barked, and Arctis scampered off into the open meadow.
Arctis had brought various flowers, gems, and other trinkets for her. He even went so far as to harvest the body parts of animals. He even managed to get his teeth on a wolf skull, which horrified Radiant. "No! No! NO!" She snarled, rejecting every single one of his gifts. "DO. BETTER!" Radiant howled in anger, having lost her patience. It had been three days since her mood swing, and Arctis was getting exhausted. After one night during the Lunar Event, Arctis returned in the morning. He was battered and bruised. He tripped over an exposed root from the tree. Whatever he was holding in his mouth fell out, rolling towards Radiant's paws.
A frozen pearl. It was a faint purple/blue colour. It was covered in ice despite the heat of the day. Radiant carefully picked it up, inspecting the pearl. A pleased smile came upon her face as she walked up to her lover. "What a lovely gift. I've never seen anything like it before!" She smiled, her tail swaying slightly. Radiant Day gave Arctis a small lick on the nose before laying beside him. He let out a sigh of relief, having finally pleased his wife.
Radiant Day often found herself alone in her burrow, waiting for Arctis to return from long hunts. Radiant didn't always hunt with the party since it was already large enough. Instead, she spent most of her downtime hanging out with Shards, a scout who had an unusual dark teal pelt. His lime green eyes seemed electric. In her eyes, Shards was pretty tall, like Setting Suns, his scouting mentor.
Radiant began spending lots of time with Shards. When the two left camp, they often stopped by places Radiant used to bring Arctis to. Laying in the fields under the clear night sky or exploring the dreamlands together were things Radiant did with Arctis. Now, she was doing all these activities with another male. Shards even took her to the beach of the rainforest where they got to watch the gorgeous, vibrant sunsets. Occasionally, Singed Stones, his mate, would tag along too. However, she was usually out hunting with Arctis and the rest of their friends.
In the early spring when Shards and Radiant were watching a sunset, something happened. Why does my heart flutter when I'm near him? The pale blue shewolf wondered, looking off into the distance. Shards nudged her, a cheeky smile on his face. "Are you blushing?" He teased. Radiant shook her head, hiding her face from him. "It's.. Nothing, really!" Shards wasn't buying it. Instead, he continued to tease her, all while snickering as her face kept growing redder and redder. When nightfall came, Shards led her to a waterfall. A cozy cove by the beach for them to hangout at. It's not like their mates would be back soon anyways.
Radiant Day didn't know it yet, but that night would be the incident that would change her life forever.
The First Will Be the Last
On a hot summer day, Radiant had to step down from her hunting duties. Much to the disapproval of her hunting team, Radiant Day had been hunting with them for three months until she was forced to stay home. That was because she was due to pop soon. It was afternoon. Although the pack wasn't that quiet during this time of day, the howls and yelps of agony rung through the air. It was a sound many of the pack members were familiar with.
After about five hours, it fell silent. Inside a burrow that reeked of herbs and medicines, Radiant was flat on her side. Her eyes were glossy as streams of tears still stained her cheeks. A timber shewolf with olive green eyes sat by her side, licking the newborn pups clean. Five new pups were born in the pack. Despite the pain and exhaustion, Radiant was able to bring herself to help lick her pups. There were two pups that had the same rare pelt as her. One male, one female. Another pup was a sky blue that reminded her of Arctis. The largest pup of her litter was a lavender pelted female, while the runt had a green pelt that neither Radiant nor Arctis had. The timber herbalist didn't question it, however.
The Cheater: Distant Husband
It had been two weeks since Radiant Day gave birth to her litter of five. Her mother was there by her side as they waited for Arctis to come home from his hunt. Sometimes Radiant wished that the alpha didn't send her mate and her friends all the way to the arctic tundra to hunt sometimes. Even after the old alpha, Berry Bark, had passed, Arctis and their friends continued to hunt far away for the best seals to catch. Their hunting trip took longer than normal, however. What would usually be a 10 day trip took 16 days.
It was early fall in the afternoon when they returned. It was still warm and sunny like summer, but winter was going to arrive soon. Radiant was alone in her burrow, nursing her pups. Her tail hid them away as she slept peacefully. The sound of pawsteps woke her up. When she turned to face the burrow entrance, Arctis was there with a rabbit in his jaws.
"Arctis! What took you so long?!" She barked and whined in excitement and sadness. "There was a blizzard in the tundra and we had to wait it out for a few days. Then, the heatwaves in the forests slowed us down." His voice was muffled as he still had the rabbit in his jaws. The fading blue male walked towards her. He stopped just 4 feet away, sitting in front of Radiant. He dropped the rabbit, nudging it towards her. "Did you give birth yet?" His head tilted, and Radiant gave him a slow nod in response. She grew uneasy, slowly moving her tail out of the way. Arctis stared in silence at the pups. The silence was loud; it drowned the burrow with tension. After a good minute of not saying anything, the male simply got up and left the burrow.
"Arctis, wait!" Radiant called out. He paused at the den entrance, his back still turned to his mate. "L-look, my parents have given birth to green pelted pups before! Just ask my mother! It runs in the family!" She spoke in desperation, her voice shaky. "I-I swear this isn't what you think-" "Don't lie to me." He spoke with such loathing. "You cheated on me. Didn't you?" He turned his head to the side. Arctis stared at her with piercing lapis eyes. "You cheated on me with him." He snarled before leaving the burrow. "Arctis, please!" Tears rolled down her face. "I swear these are your pups! Please come back!" She cried out, but her pleas fell upon deaf ears. Radiant spent the rest of the day silently weeping to herself.
A Broken Heart is Shattered to Pieces
Radiant's mother, Tengoku, passed away a few days after Arctis had left. Devastated, Radiant spent weeks alone in her burrow. She was grieving over the loss of her mother and the loss of her mate. Every day, the herbalist, Cece, would visit her and help her look after the pups. Though, both shewolves didn't have much experience being mothers. Sometimes Epsilon and her mate, Autumn, would visit her. They were close friends of Radiant and Arctis, and they were all in the same hunting party. The two were parents themselves and would offer advice to Radiant, which made her feel a bit less stressed.
Word of Radiant Day's infidelity spread quickly in the pack. Most of the pack cast a blind eye to her. However, the only ridicule that Shards got was a scolding by his mates and the pack elders. Otherwise, he doing fine in his polyamorous relationship. He kept avoiding her too, and never once visited her since the birth of her pups. Radiant didn't take this lightly. He was the father of two of her pups, after all. Three weeks after the birth of her pups, she finally confronted him.
"You IMP! This is all your fault!" Radiant snarled at the dark green wolf in front of her. His glowing green eyes seemed charged with anger. "Why didn't you say no that night?!" He replied, his voice ringing through the cluster of trees they were in. "It's because you tricked me! You tricked me like the snake you are!" The pale blue female yipped. She knew there was an audience watching them, listening to every word they said. If she played the victim card and pulled it off, would they finally notice her once more?
Shards scoffed, his lime green eyes harshly gazing into her crimson red eyes. "I would NEVER do such a thing! Especially not to my own friend!" "WE AREN'T FRIENDS, SHARDS!" Radiant spoke with growing hatred in her voice. "I WISH WE NEVER MET! YOU RUINED MY LIFE!" She was on the verge of tears. The male looked at her with a hurt expression. "YOU DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO CHECK ON ME- NOT ONCE AFTER THE PUPS WERE BORN! THAT GREEN ONE IS YOURS, Y'KNOW?!" Tears rolled down her cheeks. Shards took a few steps forward but Radiant let out a vicious snarl which made him freeze. "GET OUT OF MY SIGHT, FILTHY SNAKE!" Shards pinned his ears against his head, backing off at that. He swiftly turned around, walking away. Radiant sat with a slump, her claws sinking in the dirt as the tears kept dripping from her eyes and onto the dirt. Her breathing was heavy as a wave of emotions washed over her. Does she regret the things she said? All to feel like a person again to those around her?
A yellow shewolf named Singed Stones had given birth to her third litter with Shards. She raised her two pups with Radiant's. Although Radiant had given birth two months before her, she was still happy to have a more experienced mother by her side. Singed was a close friend of hers, too.
Arctis still didn't show up to the pack yet, and Radiant only thought of the worst that happened to him. Singed reassured her, however. She told her: "Only think about the positives in life", and so Radiant tried. Around three weeks after her pups turned two months, Radiant's litter was fully weaned and ready for their meat diet. It was late fall. times were getting colder but prey was getting fatter for winter. Radiant left her burrow in the late afternoon to go and hunt, stepping out of the safety of the cedar tree cluster and out into the open meadow. She hadn't gone on a hunt in months, but this would be a great opportunity to see if she still had what it takes. While she was gone, Singed Stones remained in her burrow to look after their pups, which Radiant appreciated greatly.
Spotting some grazing rabbits over the rolling hills of the meadows, the pale blue shewolf immediately went into chase mode. She ran after them, and was able to catch a decent sized one with the help of her speed. Padding through the tall grass with the rabbit in her jaws, Radiant hummed happily to herself. Her mood immediately went sour, when she saw what was in the distance. Her jaws fell open, the rabbit falling to the ground. It was Arctis. There was another wolf with him. A tall, white wolf with pale skin. She sniffed the air. It's a female. The two were giggling, seemingly enjoying each other's company. Had Arctis gone and cheated on her as revenge? Feeling hurt beyond belief, Radiant picked up the rabbit and took the long way around them. She kept a distance of at least 20 feet until she eventually made it back to the cedar tree cluster. Returning to her burrow, Singed praised her for hunting all on her own, but she quickly noticed that something was wrong.
"Radiant, darling. What's the matter?" She spoke in a deep yet gentle voice. Her ears were pinned against her head. "It's... It's nothing. I'm fine." Radiant forced a smile, but Singed wasn't buying it. "You know you can tell me anything." She said with a slight whisper. The pale blue shewolf let out a sigh. "I saw Arctis on the territory outskirts." Her head perked up at this. "Did you talk to him? What happened out there?" She asked, but Radiant just shook her head. "He was with another shewolf. I didn't confront them.." Her eyes were glossy as they began to tear up. Singed Stones pulled her into an embrace, and the two spent the rest of the day in the burrow in silence.
It had been two weeks since Radiant last saw her ex. She refused to speak to anyone. Not even her own friends or pups could get a word out of her. It was the last week of october, so Radiant decided to catch a plump hare. She prowled the grasslands for any, and she was able to catch one. It was late afternoon when Radiant returned home, and she gave the hare to her five pups. She didn't eat anything from the carcass, and instead just sat in sad silence at the end of her burrow.
As it got darker outside, Radiant decided to go and watch the sunset. It was the only thing that made her happy anymore because of its beauty. The pale blue shewolf left the Cedar tree cluster, venturing out into the meadows. She was still close enough to the cluster to race back if anything happened, but Radiant didn't think that would happen. As she walked closer to the nearest hill, she noticed two figures atop it. One of their voices was pretty familiar to her, and the scent of one of the strangers confirmed her suspicion. It was Arctis...
Radiant stormed over with fury. "YOU!" Her voice was filled with loathing; her eyes were burning with rage. "I can't believe it.. Look who showed up after ALL this time!" She let out a snarled. The shewolf Arctis was with had her ears pinned, her head lowered as she stood behind her ex. The icy blue male was standing devensively in front of her, giving Radiant nothing but a harsh glare. "So you aren't going to say anything? NOTHING AT ALL?!" Radiant was just inches away from his face. She just couldn't contain her anger towards Arctis. "WHO IS THIS?! SPEAK UP!!" She demanded, and Arctis let out a slight growl. "My mate." He said coldly, and that made Radiant to tear up. He left me for this... thing?! "So you wanted revenge, huh?" She said with a shakey voice. "I see how it is. Enjoy your life with that.. Creature." Radiant practically hissed as she narrowed her eyes at the confused Theta. Radiant promptly turned around and ran back to the cedar tree cluster.
She ran straight to her burrow devastated to find out that Arctis had completely abandoned the family for another shewolf. Radiant curled up by her pups, silently weeping to herself. Words couldn't describe how hurt and betrayed she felt in that moment.
