Fernstar's Entrance
Duskpaw pounced on Riverpup and the younger wolf collapsed under his weight. "Are you excited?" he asked.
Riverpup grunted. "Leaping for joy."
Duskpaw got to his paws. "It'll be nice to have a denmate again. We're going to be best friends."
Riverpup stood up and shook the dust out of his coat. "Yeah, right. I'll shred you in training."
Duskpaw crouched down. "We'll see about that." As he prepared for his spring, he spotted Snakevine, Harespring, and Blossompaw enter the clearing with two strangers. "Blossompaw's alive!" Duskpaw announced, relieved to see her. The young she-wolf had been taken in the night by a rival pack. His mentor, Snakevine, had refused to believe that she had been killed. With Harespring's permission, he left on a quest to find her.
He looked at his mentor covered in blood and his fur raised across his spine. These strangers must be the invaders who kidnapped Blossompaw. He nodded appraisingly when he noticed that the gray she-wolf was limping, and the brown wolf was missing fur and had a torn ear. Duskpaw blinked as he watched Harespring usher Snakevine and Blossompaw toward Otterstream's den. The healer would patch them up. Then Harespring's cream fur bristled and she said, "Follow me," before leading the two strangers into Hiddenstar's den.
He was too focused on the scene unfolding to pay attention to Riverpup. The broad-shouldered pup launched himself into Duskpaw's side and barreled him over. "Told you, I'd shred you."
Duskpaw shoved him away. "Can't you see there's something going on?"
"So?"
"We have real enemies in camp," Duskpaw said. "You should save your strength so you can fight for our pack."
"So, let's go into Hiddenstar's den and find out what's going on," Riverpup said with a roll of his eyes.
"No," Duskpaw said firmly. "Hiddenstar doesn't like to be disturbed."
"What? Are you scared?"
Duskpaw took a deep breath. "No, of course not."
"Then let's do it," Riverpup said.
Duskpaw sighed. I'm not scared. Just cautious. I haven't even met Hiddenstar. Who knows what he's like? "Okay, let's creep around the edges of camp and listen through the brambles on the outside of Hiddenstar's den."
Riverpup rolled his eyes. "Too scared to go in there?"
"Do you want your apprenticeship to be held back another moon because of your arrogance? I'm looking out for you."
Riverpup frowned. "Fine."
The two crept around the edge of camp keeping to the shadows as the sun sat. Though their packmates were in the clearing, they were too focused on the stranger to pay attention to the two adolescents. They slipped behind Otterstream's den and found themselves in a narrow crevice. A stone wall flanked their left while woven brambles flanked their right and formed Otterstream's den.
"Where's his den?" Riverpup whispered. "You said there'd be brambles, not stone."
Duskpaw shifted on his paws uncomfortably. "I just assumed."
"Featherbrain," Riverpup muttered before pressing his ear against the stone wall.
"Hear anything?" Duskpaw asked, sitting down.
"Shut up," Riverpup growled. "I'm trying to listen."
"What are you two doing back here?"
Duskpaw gulped and turned to see Snakevine, plastered with herb poultices, standing at the entry of the small crevice. "We, uh..."
"We wanted to make sure the kidnappers were dealt with and to warn the pack if they escaped Hiddenstar's wrath," Riverpup said boldly, and Duskpaw resisted the urge to hold the young pup's muzzle closed with his paws.
"Otterstream says there's been a prophecy," Snakevine said blankly. "Those two wolves who helped rescue Blossompaw by the way, are destined to lead this pack after Hiddenstar."
"But what about Harespring?" Duskpaw stammered out.
Snakevine shrugged. "The Pack of Endless Hunting knows best and their visions have never led us astray."
Duskpaw nodded.
"Like some dead wolves should get to choose," Riverpup grumbled.
Snakevine shot him a warning look. "And young pups shouldn't be eavesdropping." He backed out of the crevice. "Come on."
Duskpaw looked down at his paws, embarrassed, but slowly stood up and walked out into the clearing.
