Fernstar's Welcome
Fernstar halted her border patrol quietly as she heard a rustling in the bushes. She sniffed the air. Another wolf. She flicked her ears at Snakevine and Harespring and gestured with her muzzle for the two wolves to circle around to the left. She beckoned Stoneblaze up beside her quietly though she knew the older she-wolf didn't trust her at all. She just hoped Stoneblaze would have her back with the wolf behind the bushes.
A pheasant cried out and then suddenly fell silent. Fernstar leaped over the bush in a single bound to find a cream adolescent hovering over a dead pheasant. He growled menacingly, but stopped as Stoneblaze stepped into view. A moment later, Harespring and Snakevine leaped from the other side, their muzzles drawn back into a snarl.
"What do you think you're doing?" Stoneblaze growled. "You're on our territory killing stolen prey."
"I could've answered the question on my own," the young wolf responded raising his head high.
"Are you out here by yourself?" Fernstar asked, tilting her head. "Where is your pack? Your family?"
The cream wolf shrugged. "Don't need one. I can take care of myself." He went to grab the pheasant by the neck but Stoneblaze lunged forward and shoved it behind him.
"Hey!" The wolf said angrily. Then he relaxed. "Keep it. You probably need it more than I do anyway. Besides, I can always catch another one."
"Come back with us," Fernstar said.
"Pfft," he snorted. "As if. I don't need anyone."
"We could use a fine hunter like you," Fernstar continued and Harespring smiled in amusement. "What's your name?"
"Bone."
"That's a strong name," Snakevine commented.
"Yeah, of course, it is."
"Come with us," Fernstar insisted.
The cream wolf looked them over thoughtfully. "You do look like you need an experienced hunter in your midst. Fine." He stormed past them his head held him.
Fernstar grinned at her patrol.
"I'm not mentoring it," Stoneblaze said quietly. "He won't make it to be a warrior with that attitude. There won't be anything left of him. I'm playing, of course. But an attitude adjustment is necessary."
"Snakevine?" Fernstar asked.
He sighed. "Sure, why not? I always wanted an apprentice and Riverpaw will straighten him out pretty quick, I'm sure."
Fernstar nodded. "It's settled then." She looked around suddenly. "Hey, where'd he go?" She dashed forward and saw him trotting confidently in the wrong direction.
"If you're coming with us, you better turn around!" Stoneblaze yowled.
Bone turned around with a cross look and marched back to the patrol.
Fernstar nosed the pheasant to him. "It's your catch. You can present it to the pack."
He snorted but picked it up regardless. He raised his head and marched proudly ahead of Stoneblaze, much to the she-wolf's irritation.

Bonepaw's Warrior Ceremony
"Let all wolves old enough to catch their own prey, join me here by the fallen birch for a pack meeting!" Fernstar called.
"About time," Bonepaw said excitedly. "Riverstream and Duskleap received their names ages ago!" Though he had exactly enjoyed sharing a den with Riverstream, sharing a den with Nightpaw was even worse. The she-wolf snored like a bear and she was always incredibly hyper when she was awake. He was looking forward to some peace and quiet for once.
Snakevine walked over to him. "Are you ready?"
"I was ready before I joined," Bonepaw said smugly, raising his head high. "I'm a natural."
"You sure are," Snakevine agreed. "And you're fitting in here really well."
Bonepaw smiled half-embarrassed. "I guess Shadowed River isn't too bad."
"Come on," Snakevine said, nudging him with his shoulder. "It's time."
"Bonepaw," Fernstar called as they neared the half-circle. "Step forward."
Bonepaw walked boldly into the center of the circle. I've never been so ready in my life.
Fernstar turned and looked at Snakevine. "Snakevine, has your apprentice learned the skills of a warrior?"
Snakevine nodded enthusiastically. "He has," he answered.
Fernstar's green eyes glittered with satisfaction as she leaped down from the log. "Then I, Fernstar, leader of The Pack of the Shadowed River, call upon our ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has worked hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Bonepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this pack with your life?"
"I do," Bonepaw said firmly, dipping his head to the wolf he had grown to respect so much.
"Then by the power of our ancestors, I give you your warrior name. Bonepaw, from this moment on you will be known as Bonebriar. We honor your dedication and independence, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Shadowed River," Fernstar finished. The leader stepped forward and rested her muzzle on Bonebriar's head and Bonebriar licked Fernstar's shoulder in turn.
As the pack called him by his new name, he rushed to stand next to Snakevine. "I couldn't have done this without you."
"I couldn't have asked for a better apprentice," Snakevine said warmly.

In all of his life, Bonebriar had never imagined that he would be a father, especially not to Nightwhisker's pup. Despite his irritation with her during their apprenticeship, he had grown fond of the wolf lying next to him, exhausted after giving birth to three pups and watching as two of them joined The Pack of Endless Hunting. Their only daughter lay quietly at her mother's belly.
"What should we name her?" Bonebriar whispered to her.
"I don't want to name her," Nightwhisker said quietly, her voice breaking. "What if she doesn't make it either?"
"She's strong," Bonebriar insisted. "Stormcloud said that she should make it."
Nightwhisker sat up and gave the black she-pup an experimental lick. The pup quickly cried out.
"See?"
"She has your markings," Nightwhisker said, gesturing to her lightly colored fur along her ribs.
Bonebriar smiled. She has parts of both of us.
"What about Nightpup?" Bonebriar suggested. "After you?"
Nightwhisker snorted. "No, she needs to be her own wolf."
A raven crowed above the camp.
"Ravenpup," Nightwhisker said with finality.
"It's perfect," Bonebriar whispered. "She's going to be the strongest warrior there is. Get some rest, love."
Nightwhisker murmured something inaudible and then fell asleep as he gently licked her pelt.
