"M-me??" I asked in shock. Lily nodded.
"I know you are not blood, but you are and always will be my son. I can think of no better wolf to lead this pack when I'm gone than you." Lily licked my cheek and I nuzzled her chest, as if I were a puppy.
"I promise you that I will love and serve this pack to the best of my abilities. I will protect them from danger and keep their bellies full." Lily smiled.
"Save the speech until I officially pass it over to you, son," she laughed.

I looked over at the newest member of our pack; the beautiful Frost. Her fur glistened in the moonlight and I blushed. Breathe. You can do this, I told myself silently. I've been wanting to ask her out for a few days, and now seems perfect.
"F-Frost?" I called to her. She turned her head.
"Yes, Chaperral?" she answered. I took a deep breath.
"Would you like to go explore the mountains with me?" I asked. Frost's face lit up.
"I would love to!" She jumped up and followed me out of camp. I blushed as she got closer to me. While walking, I accidentally (or maybe on purpose) brushed my tail over her flank. Frost blushed and looked away from me. Was that a good sign?

I looked over my pack and my heart swelled with pride. I miss Lily so much, but I know I'm making her proud. The ever-changing forest was a good move for us. I watched Promise flirt with a couple of wolves fighting for her attention while Salmon glared at the suitors. Lark was begging Kava to take her exploring, even though she was still a puppy. I smiled. Life is good.
