A lovely scent fills my nose. Hard as it is to breathe, it warms my heart.
I feel a soft presence. It's my mother. I feel another cuddled close beside me. I can smell him too. My brother.
I am struggling to breathe. Why can't I breathe?
My eyes open ever so slightly. I see the fuzzy outline of kind eyes looking at me. But they're teary. Why is mom crying?
Two days later, I am disrupting the den with my labored wheezing. It hurts. I am scared. I look to my brother, who is struggling the same. We cuddle up together, comforting one another.
Mom is talking quietly with another. She looks very sad. It makes me sad. I can't see or hear very well, but I've heard her say I am special. And so is my brother. But why do they still cry?
Three days later, I am feeling as though I am fading. I haven't eaten and I haven't slept. All I want is to breathe. But it takes all my energy. I am sad.
Mom and others begin to give me flowers and ribbons. It makes me feel pretty. But why are they doing this?
Next nightfall, my brother and I are being carried to a strange place. We are scared and begin to weep. Mom tries her best to soothe us through her own tears. Why are they taking us away? Were we bad?
I can hear the faint muffled sounds of a waterfall. I can see brilliant lights gleaming in the sky. They set me down and my brother beside me.
I start to lose focus and everything fades. I am now gasping for air, on the brink of death. I whimper quietly for my mom, but she only watches me, her tired eyes full of despair.
Then, a strange cloaked wolf appears in front of us, two glowing stones in his jaws. He places them down and scoots them closer. Mother comes closer and places her paw on my head.
"Don't worry, my love. Soon you will be able to breathe," she says to me. And ever so gently, she pushes my head forward until I feel a zap on my nose when I touch the stone.
I can breathe. And I'm okay. I can see and I can hear. I look up, and the brilliant lights of the night sky shine brighter than ever.
