She can sense it before she sees it, turning her ears this way and that. Soon enough, her eyes catch up with her instinct. There, amidst the storm-bent pine trees, in the twilight of a hostile horizon, a shadow is moving closer. She can smell its intent even against the wind, and it hardens her resolve.
The lone wolf approaches under the growing cover of the night, but she is prepared.
His hunger is plain, but it's not the whale carcass at the shore that is drawing him in. She lifts her gaze up to where the sky is glimmering with the constellation carrying her name, and howls with all her considerable might.
He is not deterred. Advancing further, he is soon close enough to make out the white of his eyes.
She draws her lips back in a snarl. It is the only warning he will receive. A chance for him to leave with pride and limbs intact. He responds with a growl—an intimidation, a challenge birthed on ground as fertile as the ice beneath her paws.
A few steps closer, and he will be able to sniff her out. To uncover the secret beyond the façade of heavy muscle and shaggy fur. Once he does, he will understand. That even if she wanted to, she could not allow him to escape.
She shakes her enormous head, unconcerned. This one is not the first, and he wouldn't be the last either. It was going to be the last of him, though.
There was no real pleasure in ending lives, but it was a necessary evil. If word got out that her pack was protected by a she-wolf, they'd come in droves. Never ceasing to infringe, to insult, to contest.
No, for the sake of peace and prosperity, it had to be this way.
Her tendons strung tight, she's on him before he can even think to strike. The rotten ice breaks with the first gush of hot blood across her jaws. It splinters, shatters, shrieks with his struggles until all voices are drowned in the arctic winds and the grip of the Iron Queen.
