In ancient texts, it was said that the gods created the sky and made the sun from molten sparks that had flown out of Muspelheim. The suns purpose was to illuminate the world.
Later on, they needed a day cycle. They were angered at Sol and Mani, or their father Mundilfari, for an unknown reason and they took the two siblings to guide the Sun and Moon across the sky.
Sol was forced to drive the Sun's chariot and to guide its two horses, Arvak and Alsvinn. Sol traveled at great speed, wary of the wolf, Skoll, that chased her across the sky.
It is said that when the wolves swallow Sol and Mani, that the sky will lose the stars and the world will be plunged into darkness, thus signaling the begin of Ragnarok, the end of the world.
