Biography
Wednesday October 9th 2024
The following story contains a tw for trauma and tragedy plus possible impostor syndrome for said trauma
It all started when the two sisters awoke. Anastasia told Cheesecake of all the cool stuff she imagined them doing as Fledglings.
Cheesecake nodded and listened, it was so much better than listening to her own worried thoughts about becoming one.
They went to the new cave they would be spending the next few moons in. There where so many other adolescents...Luckily, Anastasia was ok with talking for her. Then it was hunting practice time, or at least, it was supposed to be but then...
Her mother and Panther came up to Angelite and told him something. Then very soon, the news was spread; Moss was missing. So instead of hunting practice, they all frantically looked for her instead. Fears rumbled in her belly...
What if it was a bear, or a hunter, or-
"We found her!" Raincloud announced, a neutral expression on her face
"Where is she?" her leader, Ilmenite asked
"Please follow me..." Raincloud said gravely
Only the scouts and Ilmenite and Moss' siblings where allowed to go.
Manuka stopped and embraced her daughters tightly before going herself.
Later, she could see that the wolves came back empty-pawed.
She didn't even have to ask why, as soon enough the news had spread all over Skies Beyond. Cheesecake had overheard so many itirations of it...
"There was so much blood on her pelt that I couldn't tell it was her"
"Her body was twisted up"
"She was barely recognisable, she hardly even looked like a wolf"
Cheesecake wouldn't get to sleep properly that night...Her mind assaulted her with images of what Moss might've looked like, at the base of that mountain they found her on.
"Wakey wakey! Lets go to hunting practice!" said Anastasia, somehow as chipper as ever
"No." Cheesecake said simply
She did not know why, but she wanted to stay. Even the thought of going outside filled her with more dread than those nightmares gave her. She had to stay.
After a little prodding, Anastasia went on her own. The day passed like a blur, Cheesecake in the den, staring into space.
Her stomach grumbled, snapping her out of it, but even then, she couldn't leave. What if she accidentally fell down a mountain? What if someone else did..?
Manuka eventually poked her head into the den, and saw her;
"Why aren't you at hunting practice with your sister? You know hard work is good for you, right?" she said sternly
Cheesecake did not answer, but she did look at her. Then her mother paused. She must have seen her bloodshot eyes.
"Wait..Are you ok? What's going on?" Manuka said again in a more concerned voice, sitting next to Cheesecake now
So she told her of the nightmares.
Manuka stopped a moment.
"Yeah…that was a horrid thing that happened.I just took on extra hunts to distract myself from it" her mum said, her eyes beginning to water just a little bit
"Come on, I'll take you hunting with me? It'll make you feel better" her mum said quickly, giving her tail a gentle tug
She still wouldn't move…even knowing other wolves like her mum had it worse, having seen Moss. And yet they were able to act normally, she was sure of it. Perhaps she was broken…
"I can't. I'm sorry..I can't leave"
Manuka looked at her daughter's eyes with great concern and simply left and came back with a piece of cow for her.
Cheesecake ate, though she couldn't finish all of it. A thought suddenly hit her. Tears welled up, her mother came to her side and hugged her.
"What if I never contribute to our pack ever again..? What if I'm never able to leave this cave again?" Cheesecake said between sobs
"You will, how about we give it some time? Maybe tomorrow you can walk just a few steps outside?"
"I don't know…"
"How about if Anastasia and I are by your side?"
Cheesecake paused.
"...ok, I'll do it"
And gradually, over about half-a-moon, she could just about walk through camp. And then…
One day, Anastasia came back from hunting practice bleeding. The red water oozed out..It was too much for Cheesecake and she fainted.
Later, she awoke in the medicine den, a place she was barely ever in.
"Anastasia is ok, well enough to talk my ear off with her stories!" Crescent informed her, half-annoyed
"Oh I thought they were just wonderful, such entertainment" said Herbert
Something clicked within Cheesacake:
"If you cured her…that means she didn't die, right?" she asked from the nest she was situated in
"Yes, that's how curing works, child" Crescent said
"Your job is to prevent people from dying and getting mangled up!"
"We try our best, that's correct!" Herbert replied
Crescent rolled his eyes.
"Do you want me to tell you 'good job' for something a small pup could figure out?" he asked sarcastically
"No, but…Could I learn about medicine? Be your apprentice?"
Eventually, Crescent nodded.
"It would be nice to have an assistant around here"
Cheesecake beamed, she was ready to start contributing again.

Tw: death, grief
Cheesecake looked up at her mentor admiringly, he had just complimented her on how her medicine mixing was coming along, on the fact that she'd made this one on her own. And the gruff wolf basically never gave out compliments! She could just jump for joy! The cure-for-all was put in their stores with all the others they had made. Cheesecake had never told her mentor why she'd developed a sudden interest in cure for all but Crescent seemed pleased about her interest in trying making 'more advanced' medicines all the same.
Seconds later…
He clutched his chest. His breath hitched up and down, faster and faster.
"What's wrong?" she instantly asked, her own breaths speeding up
I think I know what's wrong…
"Go. Cure-for-all, now" he said in a hoarse erratic voice
She spurred her paws into action to get a cure-for-all from their medicine stores.
Where is it?!
She dug at the ground frantically, maybe they've accidentally buried it..?
Nothing. Nothing was there. It didn't make sense.
There was no time to figure out why it was gone though. She simply took all the herbs and remedies in their stores and brought as many as she could to Crescent.
"There's no cure for all. Please..tell me what to do?"
She didn't want to accidentally give him the wrong thing for an ailment so serious.
He didn't respond.
She put ginger in his mouth and massaged his jaw, urging him to swallow. He told her once of how it was good for clearing lungs.
Nothing. Not for several minutes.
She killed him.
Cheesecake rushed to tell Ilmenite who then announced it to the rest of the pack.
Days passed, and a funeral was held. She made sure to sit as far from Crescent's body as she could, out of respect. She couldn't even bring herself to sit vigil for him at first, how could anyone want their own murderer at a vigil?
Why didn't she try harder?
Why didn't she prepare more for her sister's dream?
How could she not think to make cure-for-alls?
