I used to think that old saying was wrong, until I learned the full saying; "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

Curiosity killed the cat, but unfortunately, satisfaction was not enough to bring it back. On her 10th month of life, she was returning from the local river, a fish clutched tightly in her jaws. A good midday snack, rudely interrupted by hushed whispers from inside the leader's den. Curious, she lingered nearby, her ears twitching towards the cave mouth.

"I don't know.. this year's litter was massive.. we might not have enough food to feed all the new mouths.. we have to reevaluate the pack."

At first, this did not phase her. I mean, what were the odds that she would be kicked from the pack?

However, as night fell, this thought slowly ate away at her mind. She just needed to check. After the pack grew quiet for the night, settling into their dens, she snuck into the leader's den, hoping to find something that would indicate the next to go. Upon a large, flat stone in the corner of the cave sat a grouping of items- each meant to represent a member of the clan. A small handful was separated from the rest, containing a , and last of all, a shard of reddish bark. Her stomach dropped. They couldn't be thinking about... no. Unless...

Rage silently consumed her, swirling with betrayal, fear, and wrath. How could they?! It must be a misunderstanding, but was she brave enough to stick around and confront the leader with it?

Without looking back, she decided to leave on her own terms. They were not about to have the pleasure of removing her themselves, not while she still had her own honor.
