When Adimena's Betrayal surfaces, being dutiful, Varis sides with the Hart against her own mother, who poisoned her tribe. (Adimena was going to train her 2 children, NOT sell them.) However, against all expectations, as Maharani is about to cast out Adimena, Txaranga the Wise who has just entered adolescence, insists that Adimena stays, and JamÄ«na promises to guard Adimena night and day, while Varis promises to protect the puppies from Adimena. Txaranga knows that Adimena has valuable healing and poisons knowledge the tribe would suffer to lose, and she has an imaginative personality, and she feels that Adimena will share her knowledge if Txaranga befriends her. Adimena changes as she comes to learn from Txaranga what it means to further knowledge in service of the community, instead of in service of oneself only. Adimena's personality changes to friendly, she becomes a beloved elder in the tribe who often pupsits – strictly but fairly – and Txaranga becomes the next herbalist.Â
