Annies birth pack was ruled by a council consisting oft six families. Though it used to be seven, her family the Shimmerbrooks used to be part of the council too until an event not so long ago left them dishonoured. As a result of this her family had the lowest status possible and these wolves weren't allowed to have pups. Her parents did their best to hide her and her two siblings from the council, but they found out eventually and forced her parents to abandon them. She was still a young puppy, so she doesn't remember much from her time with her birth family. Since her siblings were abandoned in different places than her, she doesn't know what happened to them.

She was alone for a while until a coyote found her. He took pity in the small and decided to raise her. His small pack wasn't very happy about that as they only had negative experiences with wolves in the past, but he was their leader so they had to accept his decision. Even though her adoptive father was very supportive, growing up was hard, since no one else really liked having her around. She struggled to make friends and was often lion. Every time she tried to make friends her peers would tease her and take advantage of her trusting nature. Her adoptive father put a stop to the bullying once her peers took it to far. They led her to a moose and purposely riled it. She would have died that day if the adults hadn't intervened. Aside from that she didn't experience any major conflicts growing up.

Despite everything Annie looks back at her upbringing with relative fondness and she is very grateful to her adoptive father. After all she would have died if he hadn't found her. But growing up she was never really sure who or what she was and doesn't know very much about wolf customs. She was already an adult, when she met a wanderer, a lone wolf who traveled the lands and told her more about wolf customs. After that encounter she decided to leave the coyotes to find herself and to learn more about her own kind. Perhaps she could even find a wolf pack that would let her join. She traveled for a while without much luck until she met Rowan Shadowgaze, an ambitious wolf. He wanted to found a pack of his own and asked her, if she wanted to be his first pack member. She didn't have to think long before she eagerly accepted.
