Rabbit joined the pack with his mother, Magnolia, but she died soon after his joining. He formed a quick bond with Dusk, however, during their hunting trips, and he found comfort enough in their relationship to stay with the clan despite having the capacity to leave and start his own pack with likely quicker success than theirs. Soon after, he and Dusk had two female pups, the first litter of their new pack, soon followed by Night-nose's litter of six males. They had a week of parental bliss, joking about how Night-nose's sons would be tripping over their paws after their girls, but their joy was short-lived. Tragically, an outbreak of pox swept through the pups, leaving only one of their daughters out of the eight new-borns alive. They mourned the loss of their second-born, but Night-nose's despair saturated the den. Thus, Night-nose and Dusk named their remaining daughter, Willow, together. In the wake of their loss, the three parents bonded closely, with Rabbit often offering a supportive shoulder to Night-nose, who had a habit of isolating herself to mourn. When Rabbit's support began to help Night-nose get better, he was hopeful that life might return to normal, but he quickly realized a distance had formed between him and Dusk. He wasn't sure of the cause of it, and for a while, he avoided her mostly out of confusion, thinking she might want to be apart from him because he reminded her of their loss. Eventually, she confronted him, and he realized she thought he had developed feelings for Night-nose and wanted to stay out of their way if they needed each other to heal. Touched by the depth of her love but pained by her intended sacrifice, he quickly assured her of the truth, and after a heartfelt reunion the pair were bonded as lifelong mates.
