You aren't sure where you are, or how you came to be here. All you know is that the paths behind and ahead of you are shrouded in darkness and fog, obscuring them from view. There's something else, too. You feel a chill, something entirely separate from the mist that clings to your pelt.
You're not supposed to be here.
"Halt." The voice is deep and carries a certain tremor of authority, and your paws are rooted in place. You dimly make out the silhouette of an approaching wolf, and in moments, he stands before you. He is tall, dark-furred, and (though you don't say so aloud) rather handsome. The only thing that breaks the image is the splashes of white on his undersides. It's like nothing you've ever seen before, and it's almost enough to distract you from his piercing gaze.
Almost.
When he takes a good look at you, the wolf's eyes soften, and you can almost see the tension seep out of his shoulders. "Oh," he murmurs, sounding vaguely relieved, "a traveler. I thought you were one of...never mind." Sweeping his own cryptic words aside, he moves closer, head lowered to show you he means no harm. "I am Stagheart of Araven," he says quietly, "but I fear proper introductions must wait. It isn't safe here." His eyes dart about, as if scanning the fog for intruders. There are none...for now. "Redstar does not take kindly to outsiders. There are forces at work here, forces she has somehow brought under her control, though I don't yet have proof of this. The last time I poked my nose where it didn't belong..." He glances down at his white-furred legs with a frown, and you tilt your head curiously. His condition...does he mean to say it isn't natural?
He shakes his head, as if to clear it. "No time for that now. We need to get you away from here. This fog is not natural, and I feel Redstar also has something to do with it. She was never the same after her encounter with the Faelcu. The mist confuses travelers, makes them go astray...but today, it may yet be our saving grace."
He steps away with a quick glance over his shoulder, and offers you a small smile. "Believe it or not, you are not the first to stumble upon her territory. I will guide you to a safe place to wait out the fog, as I have all others. If you follow me, I'll show you what I mean."
Normally, any wolf would think twice about trusting a total stranger, much less one who openly admits to serving a hostile leader. But oddly enough, you feel no fear, not like before. His words, his cadence, his demeanor...everything about this male calms and soothes you, and you find yourself taking a few steps in his direction.
Somehow you know, without knowing, that he will not let any harm come to you.
