0 months: Born to one of the pack's original Hunters, Comet, and the younger Snicker. Several months earlier, Comet had been lamenting the fact that he was almost 7 years old and had never gotten the chance to sire pups and carry on his family line. Snicker, hearing this, offered to act as a surrogate for him to have a litter.
One of the pups died shortly after being born, leaving Comet with a single son with whom he was instantly smitten.
10 months: Comet's age finally catches up to him, and he passes away in his sleep. The death of one of their first members rocks the whole pack, and leaves his son distraught.
11 months old: Astral has been slowly processing his grief by wandering the Mountain's unoccupied chambers by himself. On one such excursion, he hears pained whimpering. Following the sound, he finds pregnant packmate Huss lying on the ground.
Alarmed, he rushes over to her, and immediately sees a spot of matted, slick fur behind her shoulder; it smells of infection. Huss tearfully explains that she received a wound while hunting and hadn't realised it wasn't healing. Astral remembers that she had recently lost her mate, the sire of her unborn pups - he had been so wrapped up in his grief over Comet that he had barely registered Honey's subsequent death.
Astral races away to fetch Flurry, who applies a balm to the infected wound, and the two of them help Huss to the Infirmary. Astral, concerned for Huss and her litter, keeps her company. As the pair converse, comforting each other over their respective losses, they recall that they are actually half-siblings. Although they share a dam, their age gap and Snicker's agreed-upon lack of parenting towards Astral made it so this connection was unexplored. The pair vow to get to know each other better.
As he spends time in the Infirmary, Astral becomes curious about Flurry's Herbalist duties, and observes while she crafts and applies medicines. He asks many questions, which she cheerfully answers.
Another long-term resident of the Infirmary is Salvia, a badly wounded adolescent. Now recovering, he makes conversation with Astral when the latter visits, and they become friends.
1 year: At the same time as Astral Rain reaches adulthood, Flurry passes away. The youngster quickly volunteers to take on the role, and throws himself into his studies with Herbert the bear. He isn't particularly clever, so he learns slowly, but he tries exceptionally hard.
Meanwhile, Astral takes on an older brother-like role towards Huss' single pup, Echo.
1 year, 1 month: Salvia, now named Unyielding Aegis, becomes a Pupsitter. He offers Astral pointers on interacting with his tiny niece.
1 year, 4 months: While out foraging for herbs, Astral witnesses UNNAMED, a young Ashen Pack female he hadn't interacted with much, accepting food from a human. While this isn't expressly forbidden, it is highly discouraged for pack members to interact with humans; upon realising that she had been caught, UNNAMED sets about charming Astral into keeping the incident to himself.
Astral hadn't intended to tell anyone, believing that UNNAMED knew the risks and could make her own choices. He doesn't really understand that her sudden flirtatiousness is her way of buying his silence, and he gives in to her advances.
Some time later, the pair part ways - Astral to resume his foraging, UNNAMED to return to the Den. From his fond words, UNNAMED realises Astral didn't yet understand the situation; she makes it clear that this was a one-time affair, not a relationship. He is left embarrassed and ashamed.
1 year, 6 months: After not seeing her for a while - perhaps because they had been avoiding each other - Astral learns from Aegis that UNNAMED has borne a litter. Under the guise of a checkup, he attempts to visit her, to discern whether the pups are his; but as soon as he steps into the chamber in the Nursery where UNNAMED is nursing her newborns, she becomes ferocious, snarling and barking at him. Alarmed and unable to even glimpse the pups, Astral leaves.
